New tire change rules for SCCA solo.

How many are looking for new tires for autocross. My tires I use now will not give me my street tire handicap for pax. All these changes for 2015. Happy tire hunting.
 
The new tire rules only affect the "stock" classes. Even I finally bailed on stock back in 2008 after 10+ years.

Unless of course you're talking about some regional autocross class or something. Plus most of the quick street tires are upping their tread rating to 200.

I ran a 140 rated tire in SM and had a little pax handicap from running a street tire. Now I may go rcomp.

If you start running Rcomps (275 or wider) I would suggest investing in an Accusump.

So what 140 tread wear tire were you using? The Dunlop ZII, BFG Rival and the Bridgestone RE-11A are all 200 and competitive.
 
After throwing my STX legal wheels & Dunlops on ACM's ESP talon, I can say, be ready for some set up changes to take advantage of the difference in grip if you go to Rcomps. At least you'd be going in the "right" direction. For the price, and on a heavier car like ours I would definitely recommend the Dunlop Direzza ZII if stick with streets.

I was sticking really well with the street tires. The Dunlop's seem like my next choice. I may also pick Hoosier a6 up too.

A setup that works well with "super-sticky" street tyres will be bouncing off the bumpstops like a pogo stick on A6s. A setup that works well on A6s won't move - at all - on street tyres - it will be way too stiff and will simply rip the inside tread straight off the tyres.

You can do one setup well, or you can do both setups badly - but that is the only choice you have unless you have two completely different shock setups and alignment specs to swap between along with the tyres.

Twirling damper adjusters won't get you close at all. That's what we're left with when it rains - we can get the car "not to spin", but that's about it. We have less grip on H2Os in rain than a well setup ST* car will have on dry streets, but not a whole lot less. I think that's a valid comparison. Fortunately for us, everyone else in SP is in the same position - we're all just trying not to spin :D

I may move over to rcomps completely, if I'm not satisfied with the new street tires. I know the shocks a springs would need replaced if I moved to the rcomps.
 
Curious, why none of you guys mentioned Toyo R1R (another 140 option)?

After January 1st 2015, all tires below 200 TW are no longer considered "street tires" (or "street tyres" if you are British:p) by the SCCA for Solo competition.

I liked the R1R's I tried out: unshaved they were quicker than the shaved Bridgestone Re-11 by about 1% in my testing.

A few of the tire manufactureres are just changing the TW number from 140 to 200 as a response. Toyo R1R isn't one of them, so Jan 1st 2015, they're a 3rd tier R-comp.
 
Until they establish some sort of real standard on what TW rating actually means, all of this is meaningless! And stupid SCCA is just forcing this game! In the end, we just have to spend more and more money on new tires :(.

I hope Buschur doesn't change the shootout rules in 2015... But that is a LONG way out :)
 
All of us have to play the SCCA game and deal with the retarded tire rule change. Well looks like I get to try a new tire and see how my season goes.
