Bay City, Michigan
just picked up a 1997 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX Turbo AWD. This is my first foreign car, and im usually into very large pickups. It has 81000 miles and is garage kept. immaculate. not a single ding, and no scratches. Now these are some things i know are done to it:
3g Lifters
I am told it has a Stage 3 Turbo??( i could get numbers off this to find out the exact model)
K&N Intake.
Some sort of short shifter Not familiar with this
Suspension all redone, lowered an inch and all adjustable
Also has bars in the hatchback and under the hood that stretch the length of the car to handle torque(cant remember the name)
Performance exhaust 3 inch all the way back

Now you can see how unfamiliar i am...again im from the world of 70's muscle and very large pickups.... i am not going to play the know it all kid, im looking for serious info on what i need to look for, and maybe(hopefully) a better understand at what i got here.

i cant strees enough, i have no idea what i got myself into here and i literally just talked to a guy yesterday and was made to understand the mechanics of a turbo Lol. im in a whole new world here.

Thanks!

And one last thing, any info on the timing belt? told they are rated at around 70k-80k miles.

No, they need to be changed every 40-50k for true piece of mind.

4g63 is an interference engine, which means if your timing belt breaks (Which DSMs are known to do because idiots) then your valves will get stuck into open and your pistons will slam into them ruining the motor.

If the PO told you he has changed it within the last 40k miles, I would want to see a receipt or id change it asap. Also change all of the pulleys involved in the timing as well, not just the belt. Until your full timing has been replaced stay off the gas as much as possible.

Also check your control arms. Its a recall of the 2Gs and if they brake on you, youre going to be doing donuts on the freeway. I say this because youre talking about taking corners "like a demon" which is even more stress on an inadequate part.

GL, welcome to the forums, and say goodbye to your money ;)

@T_Scott- My uncle is heavy into old muscle drags and says the clutch is in amazing condition, hes the one that pointed it out to me and then i talked to a friend who is out of phils transmission my auto city speedway who now does machine work. he agreed. its fine, just gotta look further into it. the timing belt being replaced is good news, that was going to be soething i was going to do here very soon since i wasnt sure.

I have a stack of receipts, even from the timing belt change, pulleys pulled. It was done by a shop. The belt is fine. I replaced the driver side control arm, and tie rod as well. I have nothing to hide. We are supposed to be working out a time when he can come get the receipts as well.

Ahhh, I remember a year ago when I knew nothing about my dsm. Now ive completely rebuilt the entire motor, put in multiple gauges, exhaust, leather interior, safc's, avcr's, you name it. I dont think there is a bolt I havnt had a wrench on atleast once, most probably three times. Dude all you have to do is remember this website and utilize the search bar. It might take you some time, but you will find ANYTHING you ever need. I didn't buy a book for a long time thanks to this website. Congrats on the car and dont be too afraid, working on these cars is actually quite simplistic.

The 3g lifters have larger holes in them which decrease the chance of them getting clogged and/or collapsing which causes lifter tick. I just had those put into my car.

If your still learning about turbos dont do the newb thing and crank the boost up as high as you can. Leave it at stock until you get the supporting mods which should be in the link posted somewhere above.

yeah i was reading up on the lifters all ready, looking at pics, the holes are like craters in comparison to the 2g. yeah and i have no intention of tearing the boost up yet, wont be awhile until i feel im completely comfortable with doing so.

i feel ya man, i came to dsm's from building mostly mustangs and a few nice turbo imports but my brain is still wired "ford" my best advise is read, read, read.. then read more.. then when your eyes bleed, read more... then keep reading.. then think.. sleep.. read.. eat, read.. then go to sleep again.. then read..

The really great thing i've found about dsms is the absolutely insane amount of info out there. It seems to me like all the moron ricer kids have moved on or grown out of cars and whats left in the DSM community are really mature, knowledgeable enthusiast. As new comers to the dsm world we truly are standing on the shoulders of giants. btw that car looks amazing.. im jellly.

hahaha Thanks on the gratz, im impressed for sure. its a fun ride and im still being amazed at the potential these little motors actually have. ive allways been privy to bore it out for more MORE and MOREEE. the compact power potential is unreal, its addictive even learning and not even wrenching yet

Yes, the car was bought from T_Scott here, hes been straight about everything and ive had no issues.!T_Scott- I do plan on meeting u some time soon to get the receipts, that day dealing with the banks and such was unreal and i was a jumbled mess with everything going on.

Congrats on the car man your going to enjoy it. We all start off stupid. I came form the 3000GT/Stealth world and still new NOTHING about DSM's besides all the bull shit and stuip things everybody say about them. Easy cars to make go fast for cheap, trust me.

WWWWWWWWWWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I FINALLY HIT 30 TECH POSTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the input, i will look into these things and keep it on my mind. any other recalls i should know about??

Always be mindful of your transfer case fluid levels. If it leaks and runs dry you can lock up the wheels. They did a recall a long time ago but only some dealers will still honor it. If you don't see any evidence of leaking fluid and the levels seem good you should be fine but just check it every so often.

Ha! I have a frantic habit of highlighting everything I read and I caught this.

hahaha i caught the same thing, only some dealerships will still honor it? i thought it was like federal law(maybe state?) that recalls are honored untill they are well...recalled.

damit ... that is one clean girl... i LOVE that color

It turns allmost a red in the sun, im not sure about the purple in the dim light but the red i like a lot

The Bay is clean as shit, i had some stuff taken apart today and its a great feeling, in fact i cleaned a bit of crud out of some hard to reach places too, makes me feel like she's smiling back every time i look at her now  ive been meaning to ask but just...havn't...how common are these cars(GSX) i dont see a lot of them around the forums, is the AWD the only factor that really separates them from the rest?

My buddy just had the dealership replace his transfer case on his 90 talon like a month ago because the recall. They just checked his vin and it had never been done so they did it no questions asked.

I've heard it go both ways from members on here. I've never actually tried it myself. I've heard people say the dealership gave them a really hard time and that others were able to do it with no trouble.

That's why I said "some" dealerships honor it.

Seems weak xD i can throw enough fuss and make it happen if i had too, im more interested in the control arm recall

A gsx with such minor mods in THAT condition? Yea, its rare. I see them in immaculate condition up from time to time on craigslist but theyre modded and over $10k

What T Scott sold you is a REALLY good platform in what looks like very very good shape. Mine was nice when I bought it, even though the PO had snapped the belt and smacked all the valves... And the red paint was faded and peeling, if not already pink... And he put an EBC on a stock car and boosted the piss out of the T25... And wired so much bullshit under the dash it literally took me months to fix it all...

In other words, you should be quite happy to have a GSX in such condition. Now, don't f**k it up. :p

ROFLROFLROFL Good catch guys, not to many catch it when I do that. Or if they do they don't post anything about it and just think I'm stupid.

The transfer case recall were on all early getrag transfer cases. VR4's also had the same recall since I think our transfer cases are either the same or extremely simular. This recall isn't going to expire since it's a HUGE safety issue. It's finding a shop that will actually do it is were the trouble starts. As a DSM with a Eclipse you shouldn't have to much trouble. If you had a Talon GOOD ####ING LUCK becasue mitsubishi doesn't even like working on stealths let alone talons.

Here's some threads from the other side of the triple Diamond...

(wolds greatest quote)
As a Stealth tt owner, I must contend that Dodge dealers are idiots, and they think that our car is "totally different" than the VR-4....

So, rather than risk the recall with those idiots, a good alternative is to find the rare Dodge/Mitsu combined dealer. This way, the Dodge people can have the Mitsu techs explain it to them. Paperwork wise, the Dodge folks can get reimbursement- while someone with Mitsu experience can insure that the Dodge techs don't eff things up....

and much much more.
Your not going to find to many GSX's in your town. Probably 1 GSX per every 20 DSM's you see.

Oh Dear, after having the engine laying across the pole barn floor and reading pretty much every aspect of simplistic knowledge i can find out about dsm's, one of my trucks has just hit craigslist and loan and behold, i am looking for another dsm(His&Hers) this is turning out to be quite and adventure.

Welcome. Good looking GSX. Do all your maintenance and read as much info as you can.

The "new ride" is coming along.

After finding the synchros wer shot which ultimately lead to needing a whole new rebuild, etay from tuners here had a 0 miles tmz stage 2-3 trans for sale i say 2-3 bcuz it had a few extra internals for 1400 bucks, so i tackled the sale and slapped in it with a new ss/tz Kevlar street disk combo from tmz as well, yesterday i installed the hard uicp piping with a TurboXS BoV as well as placed the glowshift wideband into te pod(not hooked up yet bcuz i got a buddy that welds, i do not) and a basic Sunpro Boost gauge. ordered a small 16g which is en route as well as a dual stage TurboXS boost controller (the switch is to make my girlfriends life a little bit easier and my pockets a little heavier) unfortunately i do not have the funds for a fmic nor link at this time but it shouldn't be long! figured id share how my "new ride" is slowly becoming less and less "new"
