Hi,

I'm recently picking up a DSM. I'm new to this world so any advice would be greatly appreciated. First I would like to know if this is truly a 1g GS-T motor in a 2g GS.

I checked the VIN and it is a 1995 GS. The current owner told me he swapped the motor for a 89-90 GS-T. He said it is a 6 bolt.

He also said the motor dropped right in. In his exact words "the engine fit the car perfect, I just needed to change some parts".

Does this look like a sound car?

These are the mods it has now from what the owner told me, and these pics are how the car sits now:

1995 GS

89-90 gs-t motor swap
fully forged bottom end
pnp'd head
big 16g turbo
venting bov
vrs aluminized 3'' cat back exhaust kit
aluminum flywheel
aluminum crank pulley
apex electronic boost controller
fuel rail and fuel line (not sure if the fuel rail is installed yet)

What im about to purchase
780cc injectors
walbro 255 fuel pump
adjustable fuel regulator
sbr ported exhaust manifold
2g front mount intercooler kit
snow performance meth/water injection
fidenza 4.3 ceramic clutch
sbr lsd diff
awd drivers side axle
dsm link, tuning for 25psi
aem wideband
ngk 2023 plugs gapped @ .026
bfg g force ta drag radials

Yeah, that's a pretty good write up on making your own. If that XS Power short route kit was still available I would recommend that you get one. The price was right along with all the positive feedbacks from probably over a hundred members that probably has this kit now.

EDIT: I see in your mod list that you listed "2g FMIC kit", which one were you thinking of going with? SBR?

christ if you have the money for that. Expecially when its just a IC you can def do a awd conversion. They can be done for 1000 easily. Most things you need are awd axels, drivetrain componets like x case, rear dif....whole rear linkage really.

WOW... thats it?

Looks like something that will get done then. I would need a new tranny that has a spot for the x case right?

Found three GSX's parting out.

I'm def going to do the conversion.

Can I get help on exactly what I need to get?

The first time I talked to him over the phone he didnt tell me it was a GS. I then asked him for the VIN and I looked it up... and it came out like a 95 GS. I then asked him and he said yes, it is a GS with a 89-90 GST motor.

Here is the VIN:

4A3AK44Y5SE108252
http://www.carfax.com/cfm/check_order.cfm?VIN=4A3AK44Y5SE108252&PopUpStatus=0

He also wrote on an email:

"Unfortunately I feel bad selling it because I built this car myself. Is like my
son, but I have to sell it. I'm into racing and I built it to race."

I also asked him specifically if it was a 6 or 7 bolt motor and he assured me it is a 6 bolt.

Everything matches his description according to the VIN he gave you.

Doing that swap must have really sucked....
Make sure you check the 8th digit of the VIN when you see the car in person. I don't think it's really a "Y". I'm doubting anyone would be dedicated enough to do a 2G 420a to 4G63 conversion.

Thanks for the info.

I want to make a rocket ship. We want easy 10's. What is the best turbo upgrade? Is it the full garret? Now with all the upgrades im getting is the "full garret" JUST the turbo or is it a complete kit to buy? I don't want to buy my mentioned mods then realize for a full garret I need a different exhaust manifold or something.

Thanks

Whoa, take it easy... slow down. Running 10's is hard enough for someone that's been tuning their DSM for several years. Unless you have a buttload of money that you're waiting to dump into this car, you should set your first goal a little more reasonably. Once you meet that goal, then start getting serious.

Garrett turbos are very good turbos, but so are some of the other brands and some of the garrett hybrids that will bolt right up to your mitsu flanges. A "full garrett" just means a garrett turbo without any modification to make it fit the mitsu flange patterns. They require aftermarket garrett flange exhaust manifolds and downpipes/O2 housings. You should do a lot of research first, not just buy whatever turbo one person halfway across the world tells you over the internet. It's much better to learn and understand what is different about each part of the system than to rely on someone else's opinion of what you need. Take it slow, plan it out and set an attainable goal, you'll be much less likely to get frustrated, give up and sell the car.

Thank you for the advise. And I do understand where you are coming from. But thats just the way I am. Several years of tuning to get a DSM to see 10's??? I can see it maybe taking someone several years because of monetary purposes, but with that not being the issue, making a 10sec DSM is pretty straight forward.

I think out of the box and I hate to spend money twice. If from the beginning I can accomplish my ultimate goal im going for it. Money is available. I have been down the road of setting one goal, getting there, then having to spend another fortune achieving the next ultimate goal. I'm not doing that again. Here is my current ride:

Oh and its 4x4 so I know the advantages to that ;)

http://modularperformance.com/customers.html

I prob have more money in just my Modular motor that it would prob take to build two 10sec DSM's. You want challenging, build a full weight daily driven 4600 pnd 10sec X with perfect driveability. My next goal with my X is slapping on a 2.8L KB Twin Screw and it will be just that, with maybe just a little help of about a 50-75shot. So "giving up" are words that don't exist in my dictionary. Me and a friend that goes by KBX (Rob) with another fully built X have the two fastest 3rd Gen Explorer's in the world. Unless someone is keeping theirs a huge secret. We are it.

So to say a 10 DSM will be hard to achieve after almost achieving a 10sec 4,610 X wont be out of my capabilities.

The reason I asked about full garret is only because I see all the record times are done with them. No one has "told me" to get it, and im not just buying stuff because someone across the world said to, im researching and coming to my own educated decisions.

I'm on this forum because I would like guidance and who better than to ask folks that have accomplished A-Z on what im after.

Unless he cut and welded the motor mounts off of a gst or gsx and welded them on to a gs then that is a gst. The mounts are completly reversed on a 420a engine bay versus a 4g63 engine bay, thus why the evo engine bolts into a gs.
