Hi,

I'm recently picking up a DSM. I'm new to this world so any advice would be greatly appreciated. First I would like to know if this is truly a 1g GS-T motor in a 2g GS.

I checked the VIN and it is a 1995 GS. The current owner told me he swapped the motor for a 89-90 GS-T. He said it is a 6 bolt.

He also said the motor dropped right in. In his exact words "the engine fit the car perfect, I just needed to change some parts".

Does this look like a sound car?

These are the mods it has now from what the owner told me, and these pics are how the car sits now:

1995 GS

89-90 gs-t motor swap
fully forged bottom end
pnp'd head
big 16g turbo
venting bov
vrs aluminized 3'' cat back exhaust kit
aluminum flywheel
aluminum crank pulley
apex electronic boost controller
fuel rail and fuel line (not sure if the fuel rail is installed yet)

What im about to purchase
780cc injectors
walbro 255 fuel pump
adjustable fuel regulator
sbr ported exhaust manifold
2g front mount intercooler kit
snow performance meth/water injection
fidenza 4.3 ceramic clutch
sbr lsd diff
awd drivers side axle
dsm link, tuning for 25psi
aem wideband
ngk 2023 plugs gapped @ .026
bfg g force ta drag radials

awdrocks, please dont take all this as negative criticism. These are just things to notice and correct as soon as you get the car. :)

No no... bring it on. Thank you. This is exactly the type of responses I want to see. I'm a total newbie to DSM and this is all helping me grow my knowledge. :thumb:

OK, you are from california and you did this swap. So, how do you expect to legally drive this car?

I only put Cali because I grew up there but I actually live in Cancun Mexico. We are flying to Texas this week and driving the car all the way to Cancun.

When I registered I did not see the option for Mexico.

That's why I'm saying it's too perfect, and also why I advise checking to make sure all the numbers match up to make sure nothing criminal is going on.

Edit: Of course, now I remember that for the numbers to match up, it would have to be the factory engine.... Sometimes I think too fast.

I had no idea this was such a big deal. Apparently it is a GS and that is a turbo....

I hope this is legit score.

Just for reference I agree that this is a gst and not a swap, even if you run a carfax it will say gs even if it is a turbo on an occasion. I ran a carfax on my last three turbo dsm's and it would only say gs, call your insurance company with the vin they can tell you for sure if it is a turbo from the factory or not. Thats usually how I do it.

I just got off the phone with the owner. Looks like it is a GS-T then... he says the title says GS just like the carfax. When he bought the car (used) it was already turbo.

Title says GS

You can turbo a non turbo. Thats what he means. The gains of turboing the 420a motor(stock motor of 2g n/ts) they are weak in power so to say. Now if you put in a 6 bolt turbo motor you can make a lot more power because there already made for boost.

Yeah...

This has a 1g forged motor. So it will be able to take some abuse. He blew the 2g motor and he then joined a forum and learned that a 6 bolt is the way to go.

The 420a can only handle 8 psi usually. So he probly learned if he forged it he could go more. Then he learned a 6 bolt 4g63 is WAYYY better then a forged 420. Then forged that. You have a good motor to play with. Unless he is lieing ;)

does anyone else see that pass rear wheel? It might be the camera or something...But it looks way off.

The point we're arguing is that if it's a GS from the factory, then this is the first photographic evidence almost anyone has ever seen of a 420a->4g63 swap. The theory is simply that it was a GST from the beginning, and it just had a 6-bolt swapped into it.

He said it has JE pistons Eagle rods and ARP head bolts.

Verifying arp's is not hard at all, I am beginning to believe that maybe this guy lied to you and that you should take appropriate measures in verifying some of these things. Just remove your valve cover and you should be able to see the seperate nut and bolt peices of the arp for the head bolts rather than the single piece headbolts that screw in with an allen wrench type tool. A compression test should yield results for the pistons if they are of a higher or lower compression piston than what was originally in there.

EDIT: Answered something that was not even directed to me.

He at first told me about the forged motor etc when I new nothing about these cars. The first thing I learned was that a GS is N/T and a GS-T is turbo. So when I saw that carfax said GS, I immediately called him up and asked him if it was a GS and he said "yes, but I put a 89 GS-T motor in it". So I naturally figured it was a N/T from factory and he swapped in a 1g turbo. I did not even bother to ask him if the car was turbo from factory, I didn't know any better.

Where im still thrown off though is why the title says GS?

Actually, the 420a can handle 10psi with stock internals, if you have the right fuel set-up. Theres one guy on here that ran 16psi on stock internals for 1 year (something I would never ever think about).

Ok well lets not get into the N/A abilities. My tsi can handle 500 hp also. For 5 seconds. So in saying 8 its what is ran by the majority. end of that please.

As for the photos.....OK yes it looks clean. But maybe he did what most cant and thats do a straight swap and make it look good. If the title and car fax says it he could have just taken the dash of the N/t also. Which i doubt. Cause then the firewall vin wouldent match and thats what they use in emissions. I say if its a turbo 6 bolt with forged stuff. Its a good buy. I dont care if i buy a damn daewoo with a swap. If its a 4g63 forged in that things ill take it for a cheap price.

AWDROCKs one more thing to touch on. Double check that the VIN# is the same on different parts of the car. See if it is the same inside the door and under the hood and other places it would have the VIN#.

The only reason I am saying this is because some people will swap out the little VIN plate on the dash(its not that easy to do but, much easier than converting a GS to a GS-T). This is somewhat common with the guys that get silvia's(s13-15) sent over from Japan(which some of my former Co-workings in the Marine Corps did) and went to a junk yard, pulled the VIN plate off of a 240SX and did a few things here and there and made them "street and smog Legal". But, these guys didn't live in california so, it was possible for them.

Another thing to do is to compare a GS engine bay with a GS-T engine bay and then look at yours and see what may be different.

Dude, you can do whatever you want as long as you have the time, skills and the money. AWD conversion are pretty common nowadays. It'll be a lot easier if you could find a donor GSX to start from scratch with.

Could it be from a Talon or does it have to be a GSX?

"DSMLink tuning for 25 psi"... on stock flimsy, soft, UICP... ROFL ROFL ROFL

Like I said... im new to this bud. I was told from Slow Boy Racing that the dsm link is just what I need.

If this is not the right approach or if im missing something please explain so I make sure I buy the right stuff.

You can pretty much make your own UICP if you have the piping so that's no biggie. Don't sweat the haters. With all the money you're spending though you might want to replace the factory crap though.

2G Talon TSI AWD = 2g GSX

Thanks...

I don't understand what the UICP is. I suppose its neither of the piping that comes with the front mount intercooler kit.
