Okay here the story I bought a gst a few weeks ago that had a real bad knocking sound after reading post after post I came to the decision that the lifters went out.But after replacing the lifter still had the knock and yes I bleed the lifters. So after some more reading I decided to take the bearing off sense so meny people had this problem as you can see by the pic the bearing pretty worn but just needed a second opinion.Should their be so much metal shaving in the oil pan?Just by looking at the metal shaving can this be all from the bearings or can this be from the crank too?I didn't have time to look at the crank need som opinion.

That looks like it mostly came from the bearing.

Bearings are fairly soft, unlike the crankshaft.

If i remember right I think the journals on the 4g63 cranks are nitrate coated or something of that nature.

When I rebuild my block I took out some bad bearings as well, due to the dumb ass running gear oil.

I did have to get my crank polished but there shouldn't be to much wrong with your crank, at least nothing that a machine shop can't polish out.

When you rebuild the block, just make sure NOT to have the crank turned. Use factory crank size and bearings.

Just a little FYI

man i never seen this amount of metal shaving in an oil pan. By the way your bearing are pretty toasted but there is something else too. there's too much stuff in this pan. You might wanna take a look at everything specially the crank. The oil passage in the crank might be clogged to make the rod bering grip like that.

It looks like from the picture there's some silver shavings in their too. Bearings will be copper only so anything else is from surrounding metal. Run you fingernail over the crank when you get a chance. If theres one or two little scratches its still usable but if it seems bad then it probably is. There's ALOT of shavings in their and I'd lean towards saying you're probably going to need a new crank.

Those are silver metal flake but I thought bearing are silver on the top layer?I'm going to look at the crank tomorrow if I can but chance are it going to rain. What will happen if I dont get the crank polish and just put new bearings?

i wonder if you can use those shavings as glitter for an art project...j/k

If you don't get the crank polished or fixed, this will happen all over again but faster.

That is a LOT of shavings. Those bearings are toast, maybe others too. That might not be all bearing either, see if the shaving are magnetic. Get the crank checked by a machine shop

Replacing just the bearing would be a band-aid fix at best, more like playing Russian Roulette with bullets in every chamber but the first one...

You must clean everthing that touches oil in your engine, even in the head. Every oil passage must be cleaned with brake cleaner and compressed air. Pull the oil galley plugs out of the head and block to do this. Clean the oil squirters out, clean the lifters out, EVERYTHING. Or this will happen again soon. On top of that your rods will need resized and a new(different) crank. New bearings of course. Your turbo is probably trashed also. Clean the turbo feed and return lines.

You'll spin the bearings again, replace them again, and spin them again. Motors are simple to understand and tear apart. But everything must be PRECISE, clean and perfect for a rebuild. Only a machine shop can get the motor back to where it needs to be for a RELIABLE rebuild. I don't think you want to replace bearings then hear KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK 50 miles down the road. Trust me, and what everyone else said. Have a shop look at the block and fix it right the first time :thumb:

Okay so today I finish pulling all the bearings off well i shouldn't say all because one of the rod cap I pull didn't have any bearing.I'm not sure what happen I notice when I was unbolting the 12mm bolt The rod was moving back and fort when I did pull the cap their was no bearing never seen this before I'm a Honda guy so this is really new to me.Can anybody explain how this can happen? Can all the metal flake be from the missing bearing?can you tell me if the crank still good?I can feel little scratch when I run my finger threw it but not real bad I'm sorry for the bad picture

This is the the one with no bearings

ooooh yea that things messed up, it could just be the flash but going on just those pictures i would remove your connecting rods, and crankshaft. Then take em to a machine shop for an "official" verdict. Because as much as we can guess on the internet the best advice you can get is from someone who has seem them in person and knows what they are taking about. My guess is that with the damage and the amount of shavings you are going to have to replace your connecting rods and crankshaft.

For reference my connecting rod caps looked like this and needed to be replaced

My crankshaft looked like this and needed to be polished so i replaced it for peace of mind.

And finally i had 1/20th of the shavings in my oil pan and that meant that the entire bottom end needed to be rebuilt. heres a pic

Sooo now that we have looked at these pretty pictures, you can see that i had no were near the damage you did and mine was trashed so its pretty likely you are gonna need a new crankshaft/ connecting rods

I had the same problem with mine. The reason why you couldnt find a bearing is because it spun. Meaning it wraped up top with the other half of the bearing. so it looks like (( instead of ( ). Lets just say i didnt know that happend and it shot a rod out of the back side of the block . Dont make the same mistake i did. Check your crank, fix it or get a new one.

or get the crank turned

I'm not one of the people who preach about never using a ground crank. But when a bearing spins that bad i'd rather pull one from a car at the junkyard and have it polished for a total of $120 invested. I ran a ground crank in my stealth and traped in the high 11x's hotlapping the 3900 pound beast.

True, true. If it was me though, I would just tried to find a nice used one.

I was thinking of taking the crank to be polish but after looking at how hard it was I'm reconsidering.I was just going to slap in some new bearing and see what happen I know bad ideal but I really don't have the time and really don't have the cash. Thanks for all the ideal comment and I will keep you posted I'll post a video when it up and running or attempt to get it running

Really not to be rude but if you do this you are just wasting your time!

That motor will probably seize right back up in two seconds! A couple of those jornals on that crank look horrible. Your already this far, take the crank out and either get a used good condition one or get that thing polished!!!!!!!!

or get the crank turned

The crank has a nitrite coat from the factory. If you turn it, you will take that coating off. If it's bad enough to need turned, you need to replace it. Looking at it, it might just need polished. You need to take it in and have it spec'd by a reputable machine shop. If it was my engine, the head and block both would be going in for a cleaning to get all the metal shavings out of the oil journals. Chances are if you toss it back together without doing that (like you're talking about doing above) you're going to be right back where you are now after starting it up.
