Is this bad? (Pic of turbo)

As I posted in my other thread, I was getting smoke out of the exhaust from the turbo. I pulled off the intake and found oil in the turbo. Dont mind the coolant, I spilled a bit when I filled up

What are you using for your pcv system? Are you using a catch can? If so, does it have a breather filter on it? Also, did you use any silicone on your oil return from the turbo? These may sound like stupid irrelevant questions but they are improtant here. The oil seals on a turbo have a gap in them like piston rings. Obviously this small gap is more or less closed when it is seated in the turbo so it doesn't leak oil. However, if there is excess crankcase pressure it will cause thes seals to leak by literally pushing the oil out. This is why the oil return tube is so fat, so that the oil has an easy time draining back to the pan without causing excess pressure. You have to be careful when using silicone on the return tube because if you use too much obviously it can cause restriction.

Anyway, my recommendations are to put the pcv system back to stock (if you have a catch can system), make sure the oil return tube is totally free of obstructions (if you have used silcone on it), and try to figure out anything else that could cause excess crankcase pressure and fix. It will continue to smoke for a few days (if this is your problem) b/c there is oil in you ic piping and intercooler and will take a while to get all that out of there.

I hope this helps you. My buddy (who I apparently have to baby sit when it comes to cars) had the same problem b/c he had capped of the vent on the side of the valve cover. It was smoking REALLY bad. Anyway keep us posted.

Hmm. The PCV system is a little awkward right now. No catch can, but two PCV valves. The stock valve was really bad...could suck air through, and blow air through. A buddy of mine had a suggestion...since the stock valve was basically like a straight line, we added a PCV valve inline with the stock one, and it acted as a real valve. Maybe thats totally fing it up....so I'll run out and remove that here in a bit.

I was gonna ask about the oil return line and how I should seal that better too, but I guess silicone is the answer

I'm saying that you should avoid using any kind of sealant and if you do decide to be really careful. If the tube and the oil pan are healthy and not bent or deformed, just using the gasket that goes there should be sufficient.

And dsmpride...you might have just helped me out a bunch. I took off the extra PCV valve, and its running great. I took it for a spin, and it has great power, and no smoke. I havent checked the turbo for oil yet, but since there isnt smoke I assume there isnt oil lurking in there. I'll update as I drive around throughout the day.

I would think if you just fixed your busted PCV system problem that that might be old oil from when your PCV could go both ways? Clean your intakes and see if it happens again?

Go to your local Mitsu dealer. They are like $2.50 a piece or so.

The best part about the problem that you had was that it was free to fix or maybe the cost of a new pcv valve. Where as someone one else could have freaked out and thought they needed a new shiney $600+ turbo. Glad to help!

I doubt it's the PCV system. Is blue smoking coming out of the turbo? I had this problem with my celica alltrac. A sh!tload of smoke started coming out of the exhaust once the engine got warmed up. Turns out the turbo seals were blown. You'll probably have to get the turbo rebuilt or get a new one.

Turns out the turbo seals were blown. You'll probably have to get the turbo rebuilt or get a new one.

Well, as I stated above...it was the PCV system. No more smoke, or oil pooled in the turbo. The car didnt smoke when it was hot, it smoked whenever it hit boost. Everything is fixed now though

I agree with TracOwner. When my turbo blew i had a buttload of blue smoke literally pouring out my exhaust. then it exploded. no $hit. I was told at mitsu it was do to worn seals.

Hey guys today my friend was driving my car and all in a sudden I saw smoke coming out from the exhaust. We opened the hood and smoke was coming from my intake too. We took of the intake and their was oil all in the tracts , and the turbo. When my friend went to let the oil drain out of the intake a nut fell out. Then we looked at the turbo and I could move the turbine up and down and and back and forth. The car lost oil very fast, itwas coming out the exhaust. When we got it towed a sh#t load of oil drained out of the exhaust like a river. What do you guys think, just blown turbo? or worse?

I had the same problem, thats why I swapped out of 13g for a 14b. I was driving my car one night, and was on the gas hard. Smoke poured out of the exhaust, and made some weird noises. I later pulled off the intake and found a nut...it fell off the end of the compressor wheel. Check the wheel and see if its still on there. You might want to empty your I/C too just to make sure no metal got sucked through it It sounds like you should only have to get a new turbo.
