Hey guys, My name is Jason. I run/own www.novastreetforums.com one of the biggest No.VA Car forums and if your in the VA area feel free to check it out. Thats not the reason im posting though. The reason im posting is because I am looking to buy my buddies 1995 gst eclipse for 2,000 and becuase he bent all the valves in the head from when a timing belt snaped. The head has been off the car for 6 months and the car has been sitting under a car cover the whole time. Im guessing the clyd walls have a little rust and that gives me 2 options.

(1) screw the block thats in it and either rebuild the bottom end and have the cyld walls honed out to remove any and all rust. Then take the head and have it rebuilt. or....

(2) screw the motor thats in it and go to a local shop like noyan (jdm motor importer) and pick up a jdm one.

So just wondering what you guys think I should do? :thumb:

Sounds to me like they'll cost about the same, especially when you factor in labor. Just get a new motor.

Well the factory motor that comes stock in the 95's are a 7 bolt motor which gets it's name from the amount of bolts on the flywheel. In stock format they were the most powerful out of the dsm motors because of the higher compression ratio, but as we all know they also have a dark side to them which is blown way out of propertion in the dsm community. Otherwise known as crankwalk. The factory motor that came stock in the 1st generation eclipses or the jdm motors is known as the 6 bolt motor. With very little modification to the crank angle sensor the 6 bolt will drop right in to a 95 and newer eclipse. The 6 bolt is definitely the way to go if your planning on putting a new motor in. However is this car manual or automatic and how many miles are on it? Either way both motors are capable of 350+ horsepower with just simple bolts ons and no internal modification but i would definitely trust a 6 bolt more. :thumb:

If your not too concered with making gobs of power in the future, take your friends block to a machine shop, have them bore it out to the next size (Im assuming .020 over). And have them check your rods to see if they could be used again.

Order a set of oversize stock pistons, rods (if needed), new bearings, a new water pump, and oil pump gears, a head gasket, and find yourself a used 2g head and you should get away with a rebuilt motor for under a grand, as long as you can do most of the work yourself.

Edit:
You can probably find someone in the classifieds selling a 2g engine they took out in favor of a 6 bolt.. you can probably pick one up for $600 or so...

Thats my 2 cents.

thanks for the help guys. You guys obviously know a lot more about the DSM's then I do and I value your opinions. I personally Don't plan on making to much power with the car because to be honest im looking to make it just a daily driver. Right now the car currently has a intake, full 3" exhaust with the down pipe and cat back with a high flow cat. The car also has intercooler piping both upper and lower along with a GReddy 24v FMIC. The car also has a man boost controller and a GReddy type S bov and a waloboro 255lph fuel pump. The car is pretty much ready for a bigger turbo like a 16g or maybe even a 18g but with that I know I would need a J pipe along with a few other things but im not even sure IF I want to put a bigger turbo on. With my 300zx Twin Turbo When I upgraded to JWT Sport 500 turbo's ive had nothing but problems with the car. I just want something to get back in forth from work and be reliable. So As long as its a good power mod that makes RELIABLE power then yea Ill be more then happy to ad it to the car down the road. I think I might go with that company listed above where you can get a stock OEM rebuilt motor for 1700 and that comes with a warrantee so that deff works out for what I need. I really don't plan on making more then maybe 250whp with the car maybe 300 tops but that's it. Being its FWD traction is going to suck im guessing anything over 230-240whp anyway's... But yea please give me any other idea's you guys have as I said I value your guys opinions and appreciate everything thus far.

thanks
