I recently purchased another DSM:banghead: and I've got a few problems as well as questions. Picture time.

Now for the pictures of my problems and questions

So this car has a 6 bolt swap and I'm guessing that this is part of the swap but can anyone explain to me what i'm looking at?

There is some sort of sensor thing that goes to a "T" in a vacuum line

As you can see the catch can was just hanging out with the return hose chilling all by itself.

I was curious if there is a bolt or something that is supposed to go here on the motor mount because there is just a hole.

I hate to ask such a noob question but is this the coil pack harness?

I'm sure these are pretty dumb questions but i'm a bit confused as i'm not familiar with what is actually involved in doing a 6 bolt swap.
And because I know people will comment on it, I do have a Tial QR and an FP intake pipe with the re-circulation tube sitting in a box so that will be fixed.

I should probably make another thread for this but while I'm here I might as well show you have bad the tune is. I'm about to watch the ECMLink Demo videos but until I do here is a log of idle for anyone that wants to look at it. The car had DSMlink v2 so that is all i've got for now.

The Cam sensor has been wired in. Nothing out of the ordinary, just a little ugly. I'd put some sheathing over the wires.

The little black box with a vacuum line is a MAP/MDP sensor. I assume MAP to log boost since the stock MDP is just for emissions. It too appears to be wired in as well, not stock wiring.

The black box attached to a plate is the ignition transistor. Without it the car won't run, but it should be mounted somewhere to keep from being damaged.

The braided lines are to the catch can, which should be mounted upright, not just hanging around. It also shouldn't have a filter if it's going to the intake, that will draw in unmetered air. I would mount it somehow, block off the top port, and just keep it.

You also have a piece of radiator hose on the intercooler pipe. Not really a problem, but definitely ugly.

Also, that BOV used in conjunction with the stock 2g MAF definitely won't help it run smooth. I'd look into a GM MAF at least, which would be cake if you already have a MAP sensor and Link. Either that or find a BOV and intake pipe you can use to recirculate. If you end up removing the 4" intake let me know. :)

It currently isn't going into the intake it is just loose, not connected to anything. Would I be better off blocking it off and routing it into the intake?

The piping and the IC core itself is pretty beat up so I was planning on swapping that out with my VRSF kit.

I will be removing that intake pipe for an FP intake with recirc tube, I will also swap out that BOV with my Tial QR so I can recirculate it.
I have a bunch of parts because I had an all stock TSI AWD but I ended up selling it.

Did you get a chance to look at the log? It kinda runs like shit so I haven't been driving it. When I did first hook my laptop up to it to get some logs I wasn't getting any knock but it wasn't smooth at all. AFR's would idle high 14's and crusiing would bounce between high 13's and low 15's. during a pull it would go to high 10's to low 11's.

Yeah, either block off the filter and attach it to the intake somehow. Either that or block of the hose that is supposed to go to the intake and keep the filter. You just want high pressure on one side (engine) and low pressure on the other (intake or atmosphere) with the can in between.

The piping and the IC core itself is pretty beat up so I was planning on swapping that out with my VRSF kit.

Good plan. It doesn't look all that bad for the time being, I've seen some REALLY rigged up intercooler piping. But a VRSF would be a good replacement.

Also a great idea. The FP intake is a nice piece and recirculating will always improve how the car runs. And like I said, if your current intake is truly 4" at the turbo like it appears, I'll gladly take it off your hands. Need one for my Holset and FP's pricing hurts my tiny wallet. LOL

I'll take a look at your log once I get my tuning computer up and running. Stoopid Mac doesn't like DSMLink.

Gotcha. I'll probably just block it off because I'd rather not have to tap into my new FP intake.

I went and took another look and aside from it being dirty as hell it's actually in pretty good condition. It is a Punishment Racing core with 3" piping.
I've read that 3" piping is overkill for most set ups. The car currently has an MHI E316G but once I get everything fixed up and in perfect working order I plan to put on my FP Green XL. I was going to run that in addition to my FP race manifold and my FP o2 housing with external gate. Do you think I'd be better off with the VRSF kit? I already have all these parts so it wouldn't cost a thing.

The intake on the car is indeed an FP 4". I'm leaving for 3 weeks for work soon so it might be a bit before I actually get it off the car. PM me though, i'm sure we can figure something out.

No rush, just whenever you have a spare moment. You've been a huge help so far.

If it's 3" piping it won't hurt anything, maybe add a hair of turbo lag. Not enough to really notice. Punishment is definitely a good brand, I have their kit with 2.5" piping on my Talon. It's put up with my heat cannon (s16g) very well, and I even plan to adapt it to my Holset. So if it's just a bit ugly and not really damaged, I'd hold onto it for a while.

As for the log, I didn't see anything out of the ordinary. There are definitely some things that need adjustment (Airflow Per Rev, TPS, A/F Ratio estimate, etc), but those are all thing you will learn how to adjust watching the videos or searching the wiki. So give them a quick view and you should be able to figure it out.

Sounds good. I'll definitely start reading up more on ECM

Nice clean 99! White face cluster/ black leather ftw! How much you get it for? There a lot of dsm's up there in Alaska?

There are hardly any DSM's around here. I paid quite a bit for it, i'd rather not say the actual price but lets just say that between the cost of the car and paying for it to be shipped up here from Detroit would cause most DSMers to cringe or call me crazy but to me it was worth every penny. I've always wanted a 99 GSX as IMO it is the ultimate DSM. The black interior with white faced gauges are pure sex and this one is in VERY good condition; the pictures don't do it justice.

Should of took that subie while you were at it ;). Nice GSX tho, love the black leather interior!

I wouldn't mind burning it haha. I hate subie's with a passion. Up here there is nothing but ignorant subaru owners who think that they have "rally" cars. Can't stand them!

It's no different down here, especially in Colorado. High School parking lots are packed with rally'd out STi's and Mazda 3's.

F&F ruined life for us all! ROFL

I like the concept behind the subies. The car itself is ugly as hell to me

Boxer engines suck, they look like ass and their owners give honduh kids a run for their money.

Yea I figured you had it shipped.. Hey no harm in that! I had my rare 89 colt Gt turbo shipped to me from louisiana! Aswell as my latest purchase my 98 tsi awd shipped from Texas, very clean stock and RUST free (hella hard to find here in this shape). So I understand shipping a car and paying what it takes, to get something you must have! ;) luckily my white 99 gsx in very clean stock condition I fond local. Traded a swapped 99 civic hatch that I built, put it this way the kid didn't know what he had LOL. He just wanted a Honda to fit in with all his lil buddies, I got very lucky there.

It was a pain in the ass to get it up here as everything that could have gone wrong did but it made it so I can't complain to much. First company ripped off the cat back exhaust. Poor poor Buschur 3":(
Then the truck bringing it up here from Washington broke down in Canada right on the other side of the border. I took time off from work so I could pick it up but it was 10 days late causing me to take more time off. I can't just take off a day or two, it's pretty much only a week at a time because I have to fly to work and I work for 2 weeks at a time.
Overall it was quite the head ache but everytime I walk into the garage and see it sitting there it brings a smile to my face haha. I'm truly addicted to these cars. My friends always ask why I don't just get an Evo or as they put it something other than a POS DSM. I just tell them that real sports cars have only 2 doors LOL.

On a side note can some one confirm a few things for me. In my OP, a few pictures towards the bottom I was hoping to get an answer for. The pictures regarding the passenger side motor mount and the picture with what I believe is the coil pack harness.

There is more DSM's here than I have ever seen in one area.WTF
Especially AWD DSM's.

I personally ran into much more DSM's in Arizona. Flagstaff, had a few and Tempe had quite a bit. Same with Seattle area.

As far as buying a clean DSM up here I hardly see any. Perhaps I don't look enough but all the AWD dsms that I see on Craigslist are ####ed up or rusted out.
