Hey guys/gals, so my fairly new exhaust system is rattling in the back. I took a look today and found that the rubber mount behind the muffler is a little loose causing the exhaust to knock on the chassis.

So:

Should I get actual exhaust wrap? Or would a clean rag wrapped around and tightened on with like duct tape be suitable? That sounds pretty ghetto when I say it. Ah well. I guess I just want to know if I use a rag if it'll erupt into flames. I also think I have some fiberglass mat (un-resined) that I could use, but I'm not sure on fiberglasses heat/melting/fire properties.

Thanks everyone!
Ethan.

you know you can get a new rubber 'insulator' is what they're called. napa, advance, autozone, carquest, they all should have them. they're not gonna be in the computer, you have to walk down the "exhaust parts" isle. the hubby had to replace his and we had a bunch sitting in back and i kept opening boxes until he told me "that looks like it" :)

but i wouldn't put any kind of cloth or rag or fiberglass mat on the exhaust. you could wrap it with heat wrap i guess, but that's not gonna stop it from moving.

Sorry I didn't reply sooner... dsmtuners was put in the damn spam folder. Fixed.

That's for the responses everyone! I figured the rag was a bad idea. And the more I thought about it, the more I figured the fiberglass wasn't going to do much. I'm going to check out my local autopart stores for a new 'insulator'. Thanks for the info ktgurl87!

And Spoolin4Ever, if that doesn't fix it, I'll take it down to the local muffler shop. I don't think it helps that the very rear support isn't up. The guy who did my exhaust thought it would mess up the look of it to weld a hangar on to the muffler. If that turns out to be the cause, and this is a persistent problem, I'll have a hangar welded on, regardless of how it looks. It'll look fine from the outside.

Thanks again.
Ethan.

My car has a rattle since I put an aftermarket header on it. I've checked the heat shield and thought that maybe it might be rubbing in one or two areas; so I bent them away from the exhaust pipe. I wonder if this insulator thing could be the issue.:hmm:

My setup so far is the header and exhaust pipe (before CAT are new), stock CAT and Resonator, Stock Pipe all the way up to Aftermarket big mouth muffler at the end. I checked the heat shields for days, but can't seem to get rid of this annoying rattle that I now hear at certain RPMs 2700 and 4000 (depending on what gear I'm in at the time). Any Ideas or solutions would be great.

I can get my hand between all heat shields without any problem (which is about 2 1/2 inches clearance.) I've even pushed exhaust pipe toward touching the heat shields to see if they are close enough to maybe cause a rattle. Nope, they are not at all. So I am stumped. So where is the insulator located and what does it look like?
:hmm:
