New exhaust, Im lost...

Yeah, its fun to say 3 inch is over kill....its also stupid....turbos make power and spool based on pressure differetial....looks at even the fast 14b guys and see what there running.
 
it is overkill unless your shootin for 350+hp... if your gonna stick with your 14b, stick with 2.5".. hell i know alot of people with big 16's running 2.5".. also did you not read that i said to get EXTERNAL wastegate dump? obviously the exhaust size matters most when the turbo reaches boost.. with external dump, the wastegate exhaust is dumped to the atmosphere, not the turbo back exhaust.. so you can run smaller diameter exhaust and flow as good or better, and be quieter while cruisin.. believe what ya want..
 
Ok now Im having second thoughts on my turbo choice. Ive been eyeing the 50 trim t3/t4 setup. That will require 3 inch piping right? I would think it would.
Garn- I understood what you said about the external wastegate, so simmer. I wouldnt mind having an external dump like that but I have still yet to hear the sound. I can imagine it sounds like a huge exhaust leak because in a way, thats what it is. If someone has designed a muffler for an external dump then I would be interested. Or if I get another vehicle so I dont have to deal with it everyday.
 
Look, nothing requires 3 inch, my buddy has a 20g on 2.25....but EVERYTHING performs better on 3 inch. Thats life. Get 3 inch.
 
As for the WG dump...not like an exhaust leak. It only opens at the level your BC is at, and sounds like a harley raping a dump truck.
 
O I see. I thought it was close to fully opened. Im thinking if only 25% of that exhaust gas flows out then I could slap a muffler of some sort on there without hurting performance. I started this in another thread, check it out.
 
and you can make the stock wastegate dump into the atmosphere with no problems?

sorry to sound like a newb...but i am one ;) and it seems to go along with the thread
 
The ext. dump will help if you are running a smaller system like a 2.5" turbo back. I am personally not a big fan of ext. dump on the stock wastegates. With an ext. gate I can see it more practical. Just not personal opinion for street cars.
 
why? it really makes no difference whatsoever at all, except the wastegate gases(exhaust) are going outside/seperate, instead of in the exhaust stream.. which means you can run smaller piping(lighter/quieter/etc)..

That may make the exhaust note quieter, but the ext. dump itself would be loud.
 
well.. yea, but youd never hear it unless your wastegate opens up, at full boost.. basically the only time youd hear it is if you were racing/really gettin on it.. daily driving youd never know it was there..
 
Another Thermal R+D customer here (although I haven't updated my gallery with pics of it yet), and I can honestly tell you that this thing is quiet. I've had it for a little over a month now. Granted, I don't have my 3" downpipe, and Cat yet, but it's actually so quiet, sometimes I wish it were a little louder. Trust me, you won't be dissapointed.

P.S. - I'll try to update my gallery with pics of my Thermal within the next day or so.
