Hello, Im new here, and i know guys in forums r kinda harsh sometimes, as i know from my previous cars ive owned, but im gunna start by saying, ive ALWAYS wanted an eclipse and i JUST bought one yesterday, and everything seemed fine with my transmission when i bought it. But now (2nd day of owning it), I'm having issues!! :(

Ok, So i have a 96 Eclipse, nothing special, except for the fact its the cutest lil car! haha (ive always wanted one, and finally after years of stupid cars ive owned, i got one!!!)

Ok, so I just bought this Eclipse yesterday, and i barely know much about cars, took auto for 2 years in high school, but Im not too bright. ANYWAYS... i took my Dad and boyfriend with me to look at this car i found on craigslist, and it was 1800, but after the guy talked to my dad on the phone for a lil while, he told my dad i know ## gunna talk me down, lowest ill go is 1600, and he was an older guy, so i figured he cant be racing this thing around, ### i always been afraid to buy one because i thought it'd b too beat up, but it was an older guy, evrything seemed legit, and my dad test drove it, transmission shifted fine, the car had a couple lil sounds n shit, but no big deals, my dad knew wutevr was wrong with it and said they were simple fixes, so we paid the dude, went n got my plates, did all that fun stuff, so i drove it to olive garden last night (3 miles away), and then this morning, i drove it to walmart and then back home, also not far, so then i had to get to work, not far, again, drove back to pick up my son from my bfs, and we went to auto zone, so i can buy all my cute hello kitty stuff for my interior, hehe, and then went to portillos, all not far. we decided before going back to my bfs to just cruise around for a lil so my son would fall asleep, we cruised maybe like 15 miles, and i was going about 40-45 mph and my car felt like it just went into neutral and reved a bunch, but barely would go, so right away, i pull ovr and my bf looks at the engine, under the car to see if anything was leaking, he checked all the fluids, everything was fine, so i figured maybe one of us bumped it into neutral accidentally or something, so we turn around to go back toward home, and it WONT SHIFT!! i was going maybe 30-40 mph and it was going like 3-3.5 rpms and it still WOULDNT SHIFT!!! so of course i pulled over yet again, shut the car off, called my dad, he said take it out of over drive, i did, i let it cool off for like 10 min, and headed back home, still wouldnt shift, so i stayed going slow (between 15-30 mph), and got back home, so BASICALLY all my trying to say is, it seems like it basically wont shift outta first, and idk wut to do. i dont have the money for a new tranny, i dont trust shops too much, and i just dont know what to do! can someone pls help me!

Ok this should fix your problem, it's a $5 relay you can grab at any auto parts store. Problem is- this relay controls the transmission shift solenoids and if the relay is acting intermittent, will cause TCU to drop into limp mode limiting to 2nd gear.

Relay is located behind battery, behind master cylinder attached to firewall. There is a pack of (3) relays, pick the one furthest to the right and pop that out, bring to auto parts store and they will fix ya up. It's called the EATX relay, A-70 in picture below.

Just hit up 'P0750 dsmtuners' on Google and you will find lots more info on it, but seems everyone that has your same exact problem, is solved by that one $5 relay. Don't worry about the price of car, it's just a number anyway. If your happy with the car then your happy with the car...:p

Nice find.
Just showing where it would be on the car. Sorry for the bad illustration ha. The pack of 3 I circled. It's the one all the way to the right.

thanks a bunch u guys! :D ## all making me so happy and hopeful that its a simple problem! i wnt to o'reillys to buy a book on the car, and i asked them about the relay and told them where it ws located and they said they would need a part number, booo!! LOL. but im going to do that tomorrow. it looks pretty easy to take out, is it? and its the one all the way to the right? because if its this cheap part, and i would have boughten the $180 part, id be pissed. so thank u for giving me options, if its not the cheap part, oh well, its just a few bucks out of my pocket. u guys r making me one happy lil girl! LOL. Thank u sooo much!! <3

Good find :thumb: but Limp mode discussion has brought up many times.

Not trying to be a smart butt,

Look what I found by searching on dsmtuners DSM Forums - Search Results

also over at 2gnt.com 2GNT.com Forums - Board Main - Forum listings

You'll see what just most end up fixing it, 5 speed swap. If you decide to do this swap and your dad/bf is mechanical incline. There's a write up for the swap on tuners but more in depth info. is on 2gnt wiki. Checkout both when you can.

The relay mod is a good one I read about it but havent tried since I'm going for 5spd conversion.

Well good thing your camera takes detailed pictures because I can see you have the 3 relays right there (in your pic) just like the diagram. Here's another picture, it's the one that isn't labeled (far right):

The relay should only be a standard automotive 30A relay -no particular part number. To verify this, once pulled out, you can compare to this picture, which is a relay any auto parts store will have:

I believe you should just be able to pull it right on out of its socket, no tools required. The BF can probably help if you have questions though :)

Dalesmitsu, what are you talking about, trying to confuse her?! She just got the car, no need for drastic measures :p

thank u soooo much!! i will definately try that first thing in the morning. im not going to ask my bf for help though, his friends and brother are all being mean and making fun of me, so I wanna try this all on my own. with my dads help of course. but this relay thing sounds simple enough to do myself. u are a great help! i really appriciate it! i wish i could do something for u! :) xoxo

and to the other guy, i dont know what your talking about, but thanks for the links or whatever about that stuff. i did read a few of the things on limp mode, so i know what to look at now. one of them said to check the wiring harness or whatever i guess, to make sure there all plugged in and stuff, so i mean, im gunna try everything before paying for this solenoid. so thanks for that. im kind of new to forums and stuff... so i dont really get it. :/

Lol. thought you said it was red?

said whats red?

ok, this is going to should VERY DUMB, but, I can't figure out how to get this darn relay out! I pull down and the part that you're supposed to push in the pull it out feels like it's going to break off. What do i do?! it's just my mom and me home right now, and I asked her, and she couldn't do it either! :(

Oh I see. The part she pulled that plug from is the relay? She can stick another relay on that plug drive around for a few days until she gets the correct one to match the other two.

the auto part store ordered the wrong relay for me. does anyone know the technical name for this relay? gosh im having so many issues. :/ I just need to somehow get this relay. we called a dealership, they didn't even know what relay we were talking about. and when the auto parts stores type in the number on it, they come up with nothing. i dont know what to do. and the dealer said this part would probably cost about 30$, and I would have to drive all the way there, when the auto part store has it for 18$, but they can't even get me the right one. UHH! what do i do?! these auto parts stores are dumbies! :p and the dealership we called had no idea what we were talking about. We had to call one out of state because it was 6:30 here, and the parts part of the dealership closed at 5:30. Haha, so we called arizona. :p anyways, if anyone knows the real technical name for the relay, it would really help me out! otherwise, im relayless. haha. I really want to check this part before buying a whole solenoid. :/

Google the part number and see what you come up with. Either that or post it up on here and I'm sure someone will be able to find it. There are also online manuals that show all of the part numbers and technical names.

FYI- I was recently turned down at a parts store because they "need a salesman, not a mechanic" to work behind the counter. Don't trust them for a minute.

If it is an auto it could be the tcu. Mine went out and my car went into limp mode where the transmission wouldn't shift.

this is true, it looks like one of your transmission solenoids are going bad. it would be impossible to troubleshoot it without mitsubishi's special trans scan tool.

If you havent, tried the relay mod, yet. Make all of your relays 3 on firewall in picture are pushed in all the way. Also, look next to the transmission dipstick, there's black box thingy check that out also.

Your automatic is the a604, changing the filter flushing should fix most problems. Sensors mentioned are Input and output. If there's more serious damage internally, then your seals are bad an ovehaul or replacement is a must.

I do know what I'm talking about
This is what I'm referring too. This is the alternative.

2GNT.com - ATMT This swap is a good weekend learning experience, besides changing the water/timing belt too.

Eventually you're going to need change waterpump/timing belt, its part of doing maintence stuff first, and then mod.

Just thought I'd help from old newbie to the new newbs. :D :p

I'll check radio shack, but no one knows what the relay is called, and they have similar ones, but its not the right housing. and dalesmitsu, thanks a lot, but i have mostly no idea what your talking about. :/ And the guy who owned the car before me says he had the water pump and timing belt down about 3 months ago. Hopefully at a shop or something, because when i had a honda before, we tried doing the timing (my dad works on american cars, doesn't know much about foreign cars), and it was all one huge pain in the butt, and we ran into so many problems. haha. but the guy says it was done, so I'm hoping it really was, because my timing was off a little tiny bit on my honda when we did do it, and it messed with so many other things, it wasn't even funny. and we weren't going to try doing it all over again, so I just sold the car and cut my losses. But I have such bad luck with new cars I buy, thats why I'm so upset about all this. this is my dream car and a DAY after I own it, it breaks. And what I'm wondering, is if the guy cleared the codes on it or whatever. I know its illegal, but this guy was one of those guys who looks like he knows a lot of people. My neighbor told me if someone did clear the codes, that it would probably take about 24 hours before the problem kicks in again. (he's an older car mechanic, he works on classics and muscle cars, not foreign cars, so I'm not sure if he's right or not) but anyways, the code is was throwing was shift solenoid A, which i have no idea where that is. and we need to know where it is to take it off and get a new one from the auto parts store, because there dumb .... butts didnt know which one it was when we told them what it was throwing, and they had like 5 different options for it. I mean I want to buy this cheap relay first and see if this can help my problem at all, but if not, I know its shift solenoid A, but where the heck that is, I have no idea. and I was told my car has 5 different solenoids on the trans or whatever, so how am I going to know which one is A? Anyways, I have a friend whos a mechanic, he works on hundais a lot, I'm not sure if those are similar or not, but he went to school, so I'm hoping he knows what I'm talking about and what can be wrong with it. I really wish I knew someone around here who knows these cars, but I don't. All the people I know either are into Hondas, and chevys. haha. I dont know what to doooo. :/

If the guys at the autoparts can't find ## part on the computer; just ask them to go thru evry single relay box they have to see if they can find one that matches yours. Those relays like yours are very common and are used for multiple things. its usually categorized under "accesory relay".

If you can go to an autozone and ask them to just match it up to one of theirs. Trust me they have that relay in stock. Unless they just ran out.

BTW you might want to start separating your post into different paragraphs; It makes it alot easier for us to read it without loosing track.

To make things easier for you; Here you go:http://www.autozone.com/autozone/parts/Duralast-Relay-Electronic-Aut-Transmission/_/N-9cj4x?itemIdentifier=419964_0_0_&newYmme=true

Sorry about that, sometimes I get to typing and don't realize until I'm at the end that its one big long paragraph. I can fix that for you though.

And the guy at auto zone was very rube and showed me all the pages of relays that they had, because the number that was on the relay didn't match to a part number they had in their computers or something. And the guy was like "we can sit here for 2 days and look threw all these relays, or you guys can figure it out and come back" So i just said whatever, give me my money back then... you know? I was going to just exchange it for the wrong one they gave me, but noo, dude had to be rude. He also said, "cant you just break off the housing and use it? WHAT!? are you stupid? then it would just be dangling there. And I don't pay for brand new things, to be broken. haha.

Anyways, the link you sent me said whatever that relay was didn't match up with my car. :/ But thanks for trying. My dads tried looking threw the car parts websites to find this one and couldn't find it. I have no idea why this is so hard to find. I'm going to upload the pictures I have of it, maybe that will help? but i have to go on my other computer for that, so give me a few. :)

The Chrysler part #4687146. Give the number to the auto supply and they can cross it over to something they stock.
