New Cylinder head...car sounds different?

My DSM jumped Timing Saturday, and I got it running again early this morning.

The cylinder head I got is off of a 91-94 N\T DSM (I have a Turbo Laser)

only thing I did to the head was used my cams from my old head because they were in much better condition.

so now the car is running...great actually but it sounds so much different

It has a much deeper less raspy tone....it use to be kinda highpitched and very raspy. The car also drives and pulls better on stock boost then it did before I jumped timing. (The old head gasket was starting to go I think so that makes sense)

only thing that is different on the motor is a Balance Shaft Delete..

why does my car sound different?

why does my car sound different?

most likely it because you removed your balance shaft. :thumb:

so you went from a turbo head to a non turbo head?

the only thing different for n/t heads and turbo heads are the cams, but correct me if im wrong. its the bottom end of the motors that matter. more compression/less compression

Your timing may have been off even before this incident. That could cause a change in sound and poor performance. I've never looked at a n/t head so I can't comment on that.

as far as I know its all the same. It's only the bottom end of the motor that dictates the turbo\non turbo because of the lower compression piston setup

good suggestion but I'm sure it wasn't. I had slapped a new timing belt on it not that long ago and I made sure timing was DTFO on top of that I check it regularaly

well if the "new" head was milled a time or two before you got it, the compression may bbe bumped up a touch.

did you install the cams from your old head? or are you running the cams from the NT head?

Balance shaft wouldn't affect exhaust note.

NT vs Turbo head is no difference except cams. That's why you had to remove the plug in the oil feed on the side of the head.

Perhaps you either created/eliminated an exhaust leak when you did the head swap, or like romeen stated, the timing belt may have been off the whole time and finally just let go. Either case, if its running great....great! :)
