DAM is all i can say that idle is crazy really lumpy and i havent yet got on it becasue the shop that put them in for me said not to get on it till it's tuned and i think they said that becasue they want me to come back and pay them to dyno the car so what do you guys think about getting on iit now??? he said i can burn a hole in the piston what do you think the car was tuned before the cam install for your info.

You can burn a hole in a piston if your car isnt tuned right and adding cams that are that aggressive would mean to retune everything all over again..I'd try to find another dsmer to help you with it instead of paying a shop to do it..

your 272s are an agressive set of cams.. they are going to idle loud as hell and lumpy.. I would drive around through a tank of gas and then get on them.. just incase. Let us know how the performance difference is with those vs. stock cams. When I first got into a car with 272s and he started it I thought something was messed up with his engine... LOL. they work great though.

i think it sohuld....every single car ive gotten in with 272 or even the 264.272 setup idles luimpy.....

they sould be lumpy at idle because the cams are bigger.... have you ever heard a v8 with cam??? listen to how they lope real bad and the car rocks back and forth and sounds like its gonna die.... thats good.... bigger cam means more power... i would know because we have a hobby stock car with a 350 and a 400 crank... bigger cam will make it lope and be "lumpy" theres nothing wrong with it....

Why would'nt he need to tune them?..I obviously did'nt mean that he was going to burn a hole in his pistons at idle..But,at around 5,6,7k rpm's when these cams really shine he's going to need to have it retuned..These cams flow ALOT more than stock..And that idle is famous for being lumpy..It's basically on the verge of dying because of the aggressive duration..

i know i will have to tuen thats not the piont i just wanted to know if you guys think that i should tune before getting on it, but thats too late i just wantch my egts and they are fine so... i have a vidoe of what they sound like with my idle if someone will host it i will show everyone what they sound like on my car thanks.

also the fast runs real good now i smothed the idle out. So it's not to lumpy anymore. I mean you can deff. hear them but before it was idleing at 750 now it's at like 950 jumping to 1000 sometimes and that made a world of diff. in the sound and vibration. it runs SWEET now and it's i big big gain in power i'm really happy i did the cams. :thumb:

There's nothing to "tune". They drop in and should idle near perfectly. That's their appeal. If your idle is bad, then they were installed wrong.

Nothing to tune? They drop in and should idle near perfectly? Say that one more time please.

I don't know what all of you are talking about, but you must be all way out of tune if your cams are "lumpy and rough" or whatever sounding. Or maybe none of you are speaking from actual experience?

My buddy (16g-95gsx on here) has FP2 272 cams, fp green turbo, 880cc injectors, dsmlink, and his idles like factory, smooth and nice sounding; starts right up. I think if you're all having troubles with the idle, then you installed wrong or you need to tune something, because they should be really smooth.

You dont need adjustable cam gears with HK$ cams. That's their claim to fame.

They should idle perfectly. See the link I posted above.

he prolly got ripped off and has stock cams call up pruven performance or victors reserch or turbotrix and ask them about a 272 cam in a dsm those are all real good dsm shops pruven i belive has a 9second ist gen and a 10 second evo turbotrix also has a 9 second evo so call them and ask someone that deals in it everyday if the idle should be lumpy or not

272/272 cams will idle very lumpy, there's no doubt about that. If you dont like it then perhaps you should have researched your purchase before you jumped in. Most people will agree that 264/272 is the best for good power gains while idling decent. As far as tuning for the new cams, if your car was well tuned to begin with, then there shouldnt need to be any retuning after the cams. Higher flow would be then compensated by the airflow meter. If you are using an Safc setup, then because of the way it effects fueling then you would likely have to readjust somewhat, but thats just something you'll have to live with if you own a fuel control unit like that.

FP2 cams perform like the 272/272 combo however as Nick said they are degreed in from FP themselves, so the idle is about as perfect as you can get. I honestly cant even tell that I have cams even in the car during idle. If the motor is running, then you didnt mess up the installation, the rough idle is just inherent with those cams. They were designed for people who simply want a full race setup. If you'd like to get a better idle out of it then get a set of cam gears and head to the dyno and then dial them in, thats really your only hope if you want to stick with that set.

Theres no claim to fame about it bro, 272/272's just simply idle lumpy. You dont NEED the gears to dial them in, as the HKS factory tolerances are good enough to get the car fully running, however to help the idle and tweak the cam slightly itself you will need gears. HKS cams arent magical cams, they are simply regular cams, many manufacturers dont require cam gears, I think that should be evident, its not something special about HKS. HKS just for the lower grinds performs as well or better than the competitors while still providing a decent idle. However 272's wont idle like butter, they have a lump to them, and theres a reason so many people go with the 264/272 combo

I'll bring this old thread back to life...I just installed a set of FP2 Cams in my 90 GSX and it idles darn near like stock. It will fluctuate a little every now and then, but nothing drastic. On a cold startup they idle a little funky for about 5 seconds then goes to an almost perfect idle. The idle sound is much louder however and idle vacuum went from -19 to about -15 maybe -14. I am wondering how lower vacuum affects boost. The car pulled very nicely with the new cams but (unless I looked at the gauge at the wrong moment) it looked like I was only running 12-13psi when before the cam swap the mbc was set to 18-19psi. I asked this ? in another thread where it was either ignored or just too dumb of a ?. :D thanks

When you change cams, heads, etc. and increase the airflow through the engine it is not uncommon to see a drop in boost pressure from a turbo or supercharger.

It does seem very odd that your boost would fall 6psi with an SCM61 because you changed your cams. That turbo shouldn't have a problem flowing lots of air at that boost level.

Everyone welcome him to the "No first-hand experience" Club. 272's will always have a lumpy "potato" exhaust note to them, that is the nature of the beast. But no, HKS's do not need to be degreed (the point of cam gears), though degreeing cams can ALWAYS help.
