OK! I am completely out of answers. I have a 99 Eclipse GST. New battery, holds a charge perfectly. New alternater, had it checked twice for proper output. New 100 amp fuse in the fuze box under the hood.

If I disconnect the positive terminal off of the batter for a half hour, re-charge my battery, and then re-connect the terminal to the battery, the alternater charges fine. As soon as I take the car for a drive, the alternater stops charging. Ultimately the car eventually runs out of juice and dies. If I disconnect battery and do it all over again, it will hold a charge til I drive it again. Its like something is telling the alternater to stop charging, because I think its telling it that the battery has a full charge when it dosent...

This all started when I got a junk yard alternater. Put it in, and connected everything, then tried connecting the positive terminal to the battery, and had had one heck of an arc, which led me to having to replace my 100amp fuse. needless to say, I now have my new alternater, new battery, and fuse. Still not charging the battery!!! All wires from the battery, to the fuse box, to the alternater are good. What could possibly be the problem!!!!! WTFWTFWTF :dsm:

Your problem might be you battery belive it or not even if its brand new battery and alternator, if the battey is not fully 100% charged then. a brand new alternator will go bad right away. battery has to be charged at low amperage to full. its not as easy as putting it on another car and runing the car till its full. sometimes you might get away with it but most of the time it will fail . the two main killers of brand new alternators is a low battery and oil on the alt. so be sure that the battery is 100% charged i seen people go thought 5 new alt in one week. LOL good luck hope this solves it. it should.

I usually have th battery on a trickle charge for a while until it reads about 12-14 amps. Then I put it back in. I have also done the generic test when I first start th car, then remove the battery terminal and the car stays runing, so its not the alternater.

No the regulator is built in to the alternator. Have you swapped alternators out? How did you test the output of the regulator. Did you go ahead and check the b+ to make sure it had a tight connection.

hmm also check under the fuse box and make sure that when you arced that it didnt burn off any connections, also follow the circuit and check for any burns or breaks, hope this helps goodluck

Did you get your alternator tested? I have purchased NEW alternators and they were junk from the start -- straight out of the box. If you cannot find the problem somewhere else, I would go to what failed last, and what you changed. You can always pull the alternator and go get it manually tested to confirm that it is good. Be sure to test it at least 3 times.

I've done the same.

The first alternator replacement from an auto parts store died after a couple days and the second one had a defective voltage regulator and was overvolting to 18 volts for a few days before I noticed. That alternator killed my battery (caused battery acid/fluid to spew out and eat all my engine bay paint).

The third alternator lasted quite a while.

I wouldn't assume it's the battery if you've had the battery tested. I'd get the alternator replaced.

Thanks for all your help.... turns out, the new battery had 4 dead cells in it, and the new alternater, the voltage regulator would stop charging after about a minute, and would not start again, so I had to replace my battery, and alternater again... FREAKY!!!!!!! but now I have a new problem..... took it for a test drive, and when II startd slowing down, I started hearing this grinding sound comming from the tranny. It stops when I depress the clutch pedal. Could it be the clutch, throwout bearing, or F*ed up pressure plate????? Need a clue before I order the wrong parts. I'm leaning towards throwout bearing..........
