In my city several gas stations are converting to a 10 percent ethanol blend, Should I avoid this gas or is it even a concern at all? Right now we have 93 octane, i certainly wont buy any gas they blend up that is any less than that. Any insight on this subject and how it will effect me?

I would avoid it. Let everyone be the lab rat and see if the have problems. I am going to tell the ricers to try it frist and tell them it will make there car faster or something like that. i dont know about it hurting the car but i am not going to be the frist to find out. Try a google search and post the results.

dude its fine it wont kill your engine. we have gas stations around here called kwik trip and they havebeen doing it for years. i wont give you the best performance but it wont harm you

Think again Twack. ALL gas stations in Minnesota have been using a 10% ethanol blend for a number of years. It is only the ones that specify NO ETHANOL that dont use it.(which is very very few btw)

Think of it this way, ethanol is an alchohol, alchohol has a higher octane rating than regular gas. You "may" experience a slight loss in milage because the energy content is lower but you WILL see a slight increase in octane.

BTW, dont post information if you really dont know what you are saying.

We've had this in Illinois as long as I can remember. It won't hurt your car IN THE LEAST. Quit acting like your motor's going to blow up from using 10% ethanol gas. All it does it creat unfounded fear.

You'll get slightly worse gas mileage, ethanol has less energy than gasolione, and I've also heard that it can have a slight negative affect on detonation resistance

You can run up to 60% eth alky before you start getting conductivity issues with aluminum so the 10% in your fuel is not a problem. Granted at 60% you would be running lean as hell but thats a different topic. Here in Indiana we get a 10% mix durring the summer to "help reduce NOX and CO2 emissions".

They starting to covert to that shit here in South Jersey. It's messin up every gas station their all closed or out of gas etc.. I work at a Sunoco which has 94 octane and i hope it stays that way because that's all im using in my car once i finish my rebuild. And my station was bussy as hell tonight because everyone closed and we wern't people are crazy over alittle gas haha!

In closed loop operation, you will notice a small decline in gas mileage because of the different stoichiometric ratio. Just as regular gasoline is stoich at 14.7, E85 is stoich at somewhere around 9:1. Because our cars don't use ANY trims in their open loop operation, whenever you're running open loop, your fuel injector pw's won't change at all. Also, since our cars are tuned to run so rich from the factory, if you're running the stock tune it won't hurt at all. Stock 1g fuel maps go as low as around 9.5:1, which is really rich.

would this lessen gas prices? I dont think anyone in NC uses it, but I could be wrong. Anyways, isnt ethanol cancer causing?

It's actually raising prices here in TX because there is an Ethanol shortage and they are having to get it from the Midwest now. We are nearing 3 bucks a gallon for regular unleaded, it's killing me LOL.

I've been having growing concerns about all of the new fuel's coming out. I wonder if petrolium based fuel prices will begin to get even more out of control due to the growing use of other types of fuel, i.e. biodiesel, electric, natural gas, etc. I certainly hope that super unleaded will still be available in some form that is relatively inexpensive, I don't want to have to sell my Talon because I can't afford to drive it! For the record gas price's here are around $2.79/gallon for regular, I wish they would let us pump our own gas in Oregon, it would probably help with gas prices!

here in alabama they have like 1 gas station that offers e85 and I live nowhere near that. regular unleaded at the cheap brands is $2.99/gal :(

here in the dokota's we have been useing ethanol for more years then i care to remember and at ten precent its not going to be a problem at all just going to see a lose in some power. but other then that it runs good i use it in mine only to get around with but when i race i go to sunco and run that so for just running around town its good as long as the boost is turned down if your running higher boost levels.and i have run e-85 too but it runs like crap till the engine is warmed up but like every one else say's you do lose milage with it too when your running e-85 i have seen a lost of milage of six mile's to the gallon with e-85 with the ten precent it stay's pretty much the same.so hope this give's you some idea's on the ten precent blend. :dsm:

I know what ethanol is, and it's funny I just found this thread after I was going to create one on this topic. We have no ethanol stations around here. NOone even knows what it is. But now, alot of stations around here are closing down for this ethanol stuff so it's hard to find normal gas.

Apparently there is no effect to our cars with this change. BUT, I have a buddy working at a refinery here, and he's clearly stated that older/ vintage/ clasic cars would be very prone to damage as oppose to our newer, recent, 1990+ year cars. Also, he said heavily modified vehicles programmed for a specific fuel will be at a high risk of damage due to change in flow charts. Maybe it thins outthe mixture? I don't want to argue against anyone over those statements, but it came froma reliable source.

Anyone who has better/,more knowledge on this PLEASE share with us..

Yes I agree, its not good. I used to be a manager at a truck stop here and have talked to many of the refinery drivers and reps. I asked them about the ethenol change and they all said its really not good for any car. They said it is dirty fuel and contaminates your fuel system.

the only thing i don't like about it is it is a dry fuel so i have been putting in some lube in the fuel to help that out and another is it collects water other then that i have'nt found any more contaments then any other fuel out there.so i just say run what make's you feel comfortable.but in the long run the fed's are making every one mix it in the fuel any more to cut down on cost because here it is ten cents cheaper and at 2.79 a gallon that helps some premium is at three dollars a gallon now.and they are saying here that it is going to go to dam near four dollars by the end of summer.

ethanol is clean burning, not a 'dirty' fuel. They mileage or power difference at 10% is negligeable. There is no reason to freak out over this.

Also, I doubt you'll have a higher octane rating. 93 octane in 100% gasoline or 90/10 blend is still 93 octane.

Doesnt anyone just use toluene anymore? I usually can get it for 13 bucks for 5 gallons at my local hardware store which boosts my ocatane to about 110 at 25%. I usually use around 4 gallons.

Is there a brand name or would it just say toluene, I've ocassionally checked for toluene and not seen it around by that name.

There is a brand name, but toluene is on the product and they'd know what you meant. At the track, I add 1 gallon to every 2 gallons in my gas tank, on the street I do a 1:4

Why does everyone that have never had ethanol in their gasoline post anything about what they heard/think? "I heard from my cousins brothers next door neighbors boyfriends aunts mom that it does ________." What's the point of posting and freaking everyone out?

In CO we've had 10% ethanol added to our gasoline ever since I can remember (possibly over 20 years). 10% won't do anything to anyones car. I used 10% ethanol unleaded in my 1968 Dodge Charger for 2 years with no problems at all.

Another person from MN here, like others have said, we have been using 10% blends here for as long as I can remember. I have run it in just about every type of car you can imagine. From a 1970 Ford pickup, and a 1973 Vista Cruiser with a Rocket 350 in it, to a Supercharged Regal and now my Spyder. Trust me, you wont notice a difference other then a minor mileage drop. Heck you might even notice an increase in mileage, remember all cars are different.
