I know it went past that....

how do I know... because there is an 89 RS I was looking into buying and it has the facotry Lo3 motor... but I do believe they went several years into the 90's.... as the 305 continued on in trucks caprice's and other such cars. I do believe it was around till 92....

it may have been in trucks and other cars but it is only listed as an available motor in 87 and 88. maybe the car was assembled late in 88 and still got that motor even though it was 89. Theres lots of stories of people getting hooked with motors in certain years when they really werent available.

just a little FYI...the 2.4 in the srt is NOT a 420A w/.4 liters more displacemet. the engine code for the 2.4 is 566A. yes it is the same block as the stratis, cirrus, mini-vas, pt cruisers...etc, but w/ improved pistons and rods. the 420A and the 566A are very much alike, except for the .58" higher deck height and longer stroke on the 566A. not causing any sh!t just getting the info straight:thumb:

I'm tired of Neon advocates comparing the SRT-4 to the GS-T or GSX. You're comparing a new production vehicle to one that ended in '99. You want to compare new production to new production then compare the SRT-4 to the Evo VIII and then compare that to the new subaru coming out as well. SRT-4 is way behind it's time - maybe if it came out that way in '99 it would be a good competitor but Mitsu and Subaru are just going to keep stepping up the competition.

And for the record 99 and older Neons only: The DOHC 420A was the Eclipse's low end model engine while it was the Neon's high end model.

I have also heard that while the Eclipse engine only makes 140 HP to 150 for the Neon, the Eclipse is tuned for more torque to get the behemoth by comparison moving. Just my $.02 worth

ok, bottom line is this, stock 420a DOHC(5 speed) neon vs stock 420a eclipse(5 speed or auto), neon will win, they are lighter cars, by a good deal

420a SOHC neon 5 speed vs 420a eclipse(5 speed), neon still wins, that SOHC 132 HP is actually underated, its closer in actuality to 137, and the DOHC is overrated at 150, its closer to 145

420a SOHC auto vs 420a eclipse(auto) neon wins again(though it may vary on the car it will be real close)

420a SOHC auto vs 420a eclipse(5 speed) eclipse wins, simply by virtue of the 5 speed this time

note: all this is assuming both cars are stock, and also assuming this is a 1/4 mile race, because in the top end, eclipses have a better gear ratio, so from a roll, I think an eclipse would take any neon, but from a stop, I'd have to give it to the neons

The eclipse 420A actually puts down around 110-115hp to the wheels. I find it amusing when someone says "my car has 140 HP" and that's the factory flywheel rating. When I mentioned to my friend I wanted to put a 6A12 mivec and turbo it in an Eclipse just because I could he said why not go for the JDM 4G63 it's 280hp but not only is that flywheel but that includes the turbo (since it doesn't come turbo). ANYWAY, back on topic - the 420A Eclipse weighing in at around 2700lbs and putting a meager 110hp to the ground vs the 420A Neon weighing in at around 2300lbs and putting probably a tad more hp to the wheels will win. I hate to say it but it's true. It also depends on the driver though. I have beat plenty of Neon R/Ts simply by virtue of being a good driver so HP does not a good driver make (although it helps haha)

yep, I was assuming all else was equal of course, I used to think of neons as rather wimpy myself before I started reading up on them, and then saw this guy with a 9 sec 95 DOHC with a 20g(I think) mitsu turbo, I was like holy shit....stock head too(built bottom end though and that thing was pretty stripped)

I was the same way but now I have a little more respect for them than I used to (though with my turbo now I can still walk all over the SRT-4's LOL)

even with a turbo thats kinda hard to believe, those SRT-4s are badass, and with a few mods(under $400) they can run 12s, or so I have been told, but then, so can the eclipse I guess, even FWD, but it costs considerably more

Just thought I would add my $.02 to the "racing mustings N/A" deal.

my friend has a stock 1996 5-speed mustang GT CONVERTABLE. not only is it STOCK.. it's a converable... so we know it's heavier than a regular 'stang.

I have an Apexi N1, hollowed cat, K&N and THAT'S IT.....

I can equal him through 1st.. that is all. when he hits 2nd I get raped like a prison bi***... no1 bothered to mention his stang will do 80 in 2nd gear.... I called him a liar to his face until i sat in the car and he did it... Just an FYI...

yeah, people seem to underestimate mustangs all the time on here, dont ask me why, after all, how can a car with a proven 1/4 mile time it the 14s(mustang) possibly beat one that has a proven 1/4 mile time in the 16s(NT eclipse), 2 seconds is a pretty damn big gap if you ask me, not to say the eclipse isnt a good car, it is, but trying to say a near stock eclipse can beat a stock mustang GT of any year(all the way back to 65, excluding the mid-late 70s models) is BS, when I see claims like that the first thing I think(maybe wrong) is that these people have never even ridden in a mustang GT, much less owned one

I got a 84 camaro that will eat up most anything with a turbo, keep in mind I said most. I haven't got the chance to run it at the track yet, but I built a 383 with too many mods to list for it and its quick. My eclipse doesn't have a prayer in beating it.

heh, cool, I have 75 trans am with a big block 400 with a few mods(heard they were 350HP stock, but I might be wrong) and the guy I bought it from said it runs 12s, theres no way in hell my eclipse could ever come close to touching that thing, even if I did turbo it, with a turbo my eclipse just might beat my 67 Mustang(289), but even then it would be a close race and in the end its the aerodynamics of my stang that would make it lose, however, as far as a nice smooth ride goes with no bugs my eclipse wins hands down, driving my muscle cars is like fighting a constant battle with a wild beast, and besides, my eclipse is a whole hell of a lot more comfortable inside

Snoopy I believe you....my friend in his 95 turbo talon killed a 2001 grand am GT, and trust me, those are not slow cars. My mom has an SE Grand Am and that thing pulls...

A grand AM GT is a far damn cry from a mustang GT, compared to a mustang the grand ams are as slow as hell, trust me, I have driven both, for that matter I have driven about 90% of production car or trucks made, camaro/trans ams, mustangs and turbo DSMs tend to impress me the most, other than things like vettes and vipers(I used to work at an auto auction, so I drove just about everything)

Someone please tell me how the heck i can beat a mustang GT in my stock N/A eclipse...i would love to know

I have a 97 RS and my mom had a 2000 Mustang GT, and she would wipe the floor with me, I didnt stand a chance. I have an intake and exhaust, she didnt have anything, bone stock, and it was a manual. Now she has an SVT Cobra (it is one of the nicest things I have ever driven in my life:cool: ) and I definitely cant keep up with it.

its not possible to beat one unless you go turbo, or do a hell of a lot of engine work, as for hanging with an 03 SVT Cobra, heh, only a heavily modified eclipse stands a chance, and if the Cobra is modified...well, lets put it this way, I wouldnt be putting my money on the DSM, as for the other modified SVT Cobras that arent 03, it would still take an eclipse that with more than basic mods, IE bigger turbo, upgraded piping, etc, people also tend to forget that we arent the only cars people mod, a properly modded mustang is one hell of a fast car, there is this one stock looking 98 Cobra that runs 8s, but I have seen some every day drivers that run 10s, dont get me wrong, eclipses are great cars, and if your goal is under 500 HP for a street driven car, I'd say they are one of the better choices, but frankly if I had a goal for over 500 or if I wanted to run faster than 10s in the 1/4 mile, personally I just want to reach 13.5 or lower and keep some decent fuel mileage, and I'm not going to pretend that my eclipse is really fast, not to say there arent eclipses that are really fast, but the fastest eclipse I have heard of runs 8s, whereas the fastest mustang runs 6s(last I heard, might be faster by now for all I now), but either of those is just more than you would use on the street anyway

Yea, I am not the biggest ford fan, but I have got to hand it to them, they did a hell of a job when they made that 5.0. Now the Mustangs keep getting better and better, except maybe the coup, I have never raced one, but I think that they have something like 175-180 at the wheels, so if you were a good driver, with a 5 speed, you might be able to take one. keep in mind.. i said "might".
-Rob

how does 118-125 at the wheels take 175-180 at the wheels when the cars weigh almost the same? maybe a hundred pounds difference(I know the notchback mustangs weigh 3200, the hatches a couple hundred more, heard 2g eclipses weigh in the 2900-3200 area) even if they had an automatic and you had a 5 speed theres still no real chance, the only thing we have on mustangs is a better high speed, since they are geared more for the 1/4 mile, we are talkign stock for stock here, and mod for mod the mustang will still win, the only way the mustang will lose is if it is stock and you are pretty well modded, and as for ford cars being crap, well, they are, with the exception of the mustang and maybe the new mercury marauder, I heard they were going to make a high performance new t-bird too, with a supercharger, but dont know if they ever got around to it, oh, and dont forget the lightning, other than the perfomance models(we are throwing in all the SVT stuff and the mustang pretty much) fords suck, but when they put their mind to performance, the can do it right, same with chevy, or chrysler, most companies can do a good performance car if they put effort into it, well, with exceptions of things like Kias, but anyway, back to the topic neons....I would buy a neon if it was a 2 door 5 speed and I could find it at a decent price in a second, I tend to liek them, just because well, I do

check out i think road and track or car and driver one of the mags out there dyno'ed a srt-4 and it put 223 hp at the wheels and 250 ft.lbs of torque. BUT, this neon already comes with a 16g turbo running 14psi and a front mounted intercooler. putting a 16g with a front mounted intercooler on a dsm will up the hp a lot more. so the neon is sorta maxed out so figure you throw on a boost controller and get the neon running 0-60 5.1-5.6 depending on the driver. not bad for $19,XXX out the door if you ask me. but also that doesn't mean im gonna pump 400hp out the srt-4 engine with bolt on mods, and as for stangs- and iroc's, don't forget that a lot of people put 5.0 emblems on there cars and Z-28 emblems on there cars when they are not.
just my 2 cents
