I am possibly going to pick up a new car this weekend, it is just a shell w/no engine but has a full tranny and transfer case. Well I dont have access to a 4 wheel auto dolly so I was wondering what was needed to tow a AWD 1st gen (92) safely on a 2 wheel dolly?

Remove the driveshaft from the t-case and rear axle, and tow it backwards (rear wheels on the dolley.)

They should - park the car with the wheels pointed straight, and then activate the wheel lock on the steering wheel. That should lock them in place.

Test it before you do it, of course.

avtually what i did was unhook the drive shaft from the rear diff. make sure you tie the drive shaft up good or completely take it off. and placed the front wheels on the dolly. worked for me and i towed it 900 miles. (what some people will do for cars :thumb: )

awesome, I will have a 300+ mile trip to get a shell like I want. ahh I cant wait, thanks for everyone's help! :dsm:

What he said.

Yeah don't do waht psychlow said to do, he has it backwards. Disc. the driveshaft, tie it up somehow, and put the front wheels on the dolly. Never tow a car with the turning wheels off of the dolly.

Everytime I see a local wrecker towing an old RWD car, they have it lifted up in the rear and are pulling it backwards. Maybe not the best solution, but obviously it's possible and easier.

I agree with this idea, I would not tow it with the front drive wheels. If you already have the driveshaft disconnected, I would roll the front wheels on the dolly.

Depending on the situation what MIGHT be easier is removing the rear axles and towing the front wheels while the rear ones just ride on the ground.

That's because the front wheels are just rolling wheels, if they towed with the rear wheels down, the transmission would more than likely burn up, since automatics typically need the engine running to circulate the ATF.
