I need to tap a switched +12v source under the dash to hook up several things like a Valentine 1 and power for gauges... perhaps even an auto-dimming rear view mirror.

Which wire should I tap? I looked at the fuse box under the dash and there isn't even a fuse for ignition there.

I've also been told that there is a thin white wire under the dash that goes to nothing is a switched source, but it is so thin I am not sure if it is good enough to handle more than two powered accessories.

do it right and run it off the heavy gauge ignition wires. use a VOM to check which is the ignition wire(or accessory if you want that instead)

accessory cuts off when the starter is engaged, ignition does not.
