Ok so I knew going into the DSM scene these were high maintenance cars. I love my DSM and would be crushed to see her go... But I wonder is the repairs in the future worth the car?

So far I've spent $1000 on a new power steering pump, and clutch install

And to still do I need to:
Most likely rebuild or get a new transfer case
New exhaust manifold
Alignment

Not much left to do in repairs but that transfer case could set me back another 1-1.5 grand... so that would be 2-2.5 grand spent on a $4000 car so far...

And at minimum wage this is becoming quite a hole in my wallet... So what do you think keep it or sell it? I'm leaning both ways... In one way I'm thinking that I should have been able to find a better DSM for the same amount of cash... The other way though I have my dream car and I'm willing to push through the expensive fixes and just wait a year doing no upgrades while i pay off my debt...

What would you suggest?

fix it.

you can find a x case on the classifieds for a decent price. Plus its not that hard to change. Alignment is $55 im getting one tomarrow and an exhaust manny isnt that hard to find or to do.

just trust me you wont be happy if you get rid of it when it could only cost you a couple of hundred dollars to keep her.

I know... It would kill me inside... never thought of looking the classifieds on here thanks :D but the other problem is if i decide to keep it i have to justify it to my parents also...

If you can make it through the struggle, stick it out if you really have a passion for cars. One thing I will suggest is starting to do your own work on the car!! If you can't do your own work then I would suggest getting a new car. Its one thing if you have the money but labor will kill you these days.

I'm currently parting my car because I made some wrong choices when I was younger.:nono: I'm getting out of the game for a while to pay off debt and get out of my parent house, but when thats all said and done I'll either be backing in the game with a super fast 1g or evo.. Both if things go well.:thumb:

Just decide whats best for you at this point, some times the best decision won't be what you want to do..

While working and getting minimum wage I think it would be best to hold off on mods anyway. I'd say stick with the DSM, you've almost got her ready to be reliable after a few more repairs. You've already dumped that much money into it, there's no way you'll turn around and sell it for $5000+ with it needing an x-fer case and whatnot. Hold off on some mods, make her reliable and DD it. I chose to DD with my GST and after fixing everything the previous owner F'd up I think my GST only messed up on me once in a little over a year and that was due to my ISC sensor messing up and giving me bad idle and whatnot. I'd say stick it out with the DSM, if you treat her right she'll treat you right! Or you can go buy a honda :p

Ok thanks guys... I'm pretty sure Imma just stick it out and keep her... I couldn't ever see myself letting this car go... :D

Yea, stick it out, once you're done you will know that the car is reliable and what's been done and what hasn't, so you'll know what to start expecting. If you change cars you start the whole process of getting the car "up to spec" again before you get to start hving fun with it.

Definitely learn to do a lot of your own repairs, these cars aren't that hard to work on, getting the trans out is a PITA IMO but still better than paying some one else to do it.

Good luck with the repairs, hope you get her sorted out and done soon

With a dsm the classifieds will become your new best friend. Trust me that alone will save you thousands in repairs.

keep it but def try to do as much work as possible yourself that will save you a ton of money in the long run labor prices are crazy now

tell your parents that it's a fact that awd vehicles are the safest you can have, that's what won mine over when i got my first car( Impreza AWD.)

I dislike you for owning a impreza but I like you for living in Gainsville Go Gators!

So why did you pay $1000 for a power steering pump and a clutch install? Didn't you think of hitting up a junkyard for the power steering pump and doing the clutch job yourself? You could have had your car back and running with the $1000 by now.

Once you learn how to do stuff yourself, you will spend alot less.

For example,

-used power steering up off a friend who has deleted it cause he wants to be hard :) : maybe 50
-act 2600, tob, clutch fork: 400?
-trans and power steering fluid: 30 ish
-1 or 2 dsmer friends over: some beer for persuasion 20

+ 1 afternoon of you guys' time and you would have spent 500 instead of 1000.

sell it and get a working 1g AWD

IMO That thing is costing you too much money, get out before you have to sell a kidney

Running AWD 2g's are for rich people WTF:rolleyes:

.. AMEN on that! So far from my travels to my favorite yard in my area that has a good half dozen DSM's I managed to save close to 1500 bucks with parts salvaged than if I would have to get them from the M itz dealership.

Like today, I tagged all four motor mounts in excellent condition for less than 20 bucks off of one DSM whereas the dealership would have nailed me over 300 bucks....(missed the turbo though - it was already ripped out of there...bummer) along with a full rear tail light and rear bar assembly for less than 40 where we know new these things are also close to 300 new..

Yea, do it yourself and save the dough .... plus it's fun going out to the yards and do your own pulls.

I got the pump for $85 brand new... $66 to have it installed
the clutch kit with a 6 puck sprung disc, stage 3 plate, and lightweight fidanza flywheel was $299 and then the install was $429

and beer at my age hahaha that would be funny... and i dont know anyone in real life that shares a passion for DSM's like I do

Well, you get my point...do it yourself and it's cheaper!

And to the guy saying keeping up a 2g is more expensive than a 1g, you obviously have no idea. 1gs are older and break more and the parts are all the same...

Ok, I'm gonna take a guess and say you are like 17 years old. Being that, I'm also guessing your parents where there when you bought the car, so they should have atleast to an extant, the damage the car has. That said, you shouldn't need to "justify" keeping the car with them. But, like everyone else said, fix it yourself at all points. Just make sure to have about a grand in your account incase things get out of control so you can take it to a shop. If you don't know how to do something, read and ask. If you still are unsure, try anyways. Worst case scenario: you end up in the shop with a fixed car and a nice bill. Welcome to the addiction. Oh, if you do decide to get rid of her, give me a ring, I've always wanted an AWD.

I dont think I ever plan on selling her as me finding her bone stock with only 2 owners was a miracle in itself :p and at the time of purchase it didnt show any signs of problems... good guess btw i am 17.
