I purchased this eclipse 1997 GS-T about 1 month ago, when purchased the guy had told me the timing belt had just been done. From first glance there were issues with the car but i was willing to overlook due to the price tag ($2000) I was installing my intercooler piping when i realized there was a missing bolt on the fuel rail... lucky me it is broken off in the head. I started digging even further and half the intake manifold nuts were finger tight and the cas sensor bolt on the side of the motor also has been broken off into the head. Last but not least as im peaking over the fuel rail i see red silicone sealant in the injector holes... The car is running fine, no codes or fuel cut however im running stock boost levels and am babying it tell i figure out my situation.

Option one - Buy a new head, replace head gasket and install arp head studs, injectors, new intake manifold gasket.

Option two - remove head, try to extract broken studs and clean head then reinstall with new components.

This is my DD so any option that allows me to get the car back up and running in the same day is appreciated. The head that is on the car now looks new, cant have more then a few thousand miles on it (super clean, new valve stem seals,no wear on camshafts) The car has 150,000 on her:banghead:

well if your looking to get it done quick i would build you a head and swap it. but if money is an issue it would be better to re-build. but drilling out all those bolts may be easy or a pain in the ass. if you go with drilling get a good easy out. if you plan on keeping stock boost i would just fix it but if you ever plan on upping boost it would be a good idea to upgrade the head.

also with the silicone around the injectors if they are old or stock the o-rings were probably leaking especially if they have been taken out multiple times. i would remove, clean off all silicone and replace the o-rings.

If you have access to a welder (mig), use a steel wire and try to weld nuts on the broken studds and extract them. Since the studd is steel and the head is aluminum, it will not stick.

I have purchased a built 1g head with hks 264 272 combo. I am also installing a jm intake manifold, ams fuel rail with 950 injectors and adjustable fuel pressure regulator. My evo 3 16g will be in Monday and hopefully i will be able to swap it all in one day. Any information regarding the 6 bolt head swap is appreciated.

I am a welder and that is a great idea!

You should try it out and try to save a head at least.
I have done this to meany studds, broken in aluminum. They will break and you will probably have to weld more than one nut per broken studd, but try to play wth your heat(very hot usually worked better for me) and coling time before trying to pull out (10 seconds or so).

Good luck!:thumb:

You can't just install a 1g head onto a 2g block there's a little machining required iirc.

You have it backwards. You can't install a 2g head on a 6 bolt block with out drilling the bolt holes. You can however put a 1g head on a 7 bolt block with no modification, aside from cam sensors and things along that line. But as far as bolting the head to the block, it fits.

Thanks for the clarification.
