I'm sure this is no big deal, but i have had some trouble trying to get the bumper off on my 99dsm. Any help would be greatly appreciated! One question: do the headlights need to be removed in order to get the bumper off?

There is a great tech article on this site that gives step by step instructions w/ detailed pics on removal of the front bumper. I know it was on the home page of this site as a featured tech article last month....sorry I don't have any direct links right now...but its not hard to find.

check it out!

Yes, the headlights have to be removed. If its the first time taking off the headlights, it might be a PITA considering there is 1 bolt underneath the headlight. The best way to get to it is remove the middle piece by the hood latch. Then reach in and unbolt them with a ratchet. Other than that, you may have a few rusted bolts, but nothin major. My biggest problem was unbolting the bumper, and having the bolt break in the hole. Yours is a little newer, so it should be fine.

You can get the bumper off without removing the headlight, but to do so you'll have to break off the two screws under each headlight holding the top portion of the cover on. I prefer to remove the bumper by removing the headlights first. The only hard part about removing the headlights is the bottom bolt. Step 12 in the tech article covers how to get the last bolt off the headlight. Also when taking the headlights out once all the bolts are lose it is so much easier to remove the screw holding the harness in place like I explain in step 13. Otherwise the harness has to stay in place and you'll be turning the headlight a million other ways trying to find a way to slide it out, but it will keep catching on that darn harness! Also when you put the headlights back in it's up to you if you want to put that last difficult bolt in or not. A lot of people just leave it out.
