Need some advise on "new" motor

I bought a "rebuilt" motor off some guy on craigslist, dropped it in and filled it up with fluids but the water pump seal leaks. Now I haven't started the motor yet but my plan is that I'm going to start it and do a compression test just to see if this guy did everything else right and if so I'd take it in for a new seal. Now my question is will I hurt anything if I run it with a blown water pump seal? I'd be running it briefly without coolant and I'd keep my eye on the temp gauge. Might be a stupid question but I want to take every precaution.

Thanks.

Before starting the motor, check the timing marks just to make sure the marks are right on. Take the 1st spark plug out and put a long screw driver in. Make sure piston 1 is on top, then match it up with the cam gears. Then, spin the crankshaft by hand couple of times to make sure everything is in place. Do not start it for long, its a rebuilt motor and it has to be baby sitten at first. But since you got to change the water pump gasket, which timing has to come off, ill change it and redo the timing before starting her.
Good luck

I did the timing about a week ago myself. Timing is still on the dot, I checked after I found that the seal was leaking. I'll spin it to have it all line up again just to be sure and to the piston position test.

Thank you for the advise, really appreciate it.

Just a warning; the temp gauge in the car won't tell squat if there isn't water in the motor. You should be fine as long as you don't run it more than a minute or so.

Pulling the plugs and checking that the engine rotates is a great idea too.

^^ this is absolutely correct. The gauge wont read air temp, liquid has to be touching the sensor to make the gauge work. So be very careful starting it with no fluid

Derp duhhhh.... LOL :coy: ROFL that just blew right by me. But just as an update right when it started the oil pump seal and crank shaft seal(?), right behind the crank sprocket, blew up and set my oil freeeee to the sea :hellyeah: Considering that the dude who "rebuilt" the motor is retarding to such an extend where he can't do a blinking seal/gasket makes me wonder if even knew what hes was doing "rebuilding" the internals. Gonna play it safe and just get a full rebuild, not trying to spend money on the seals just for the motor to throw something.

Thanks though guys!
