OK i'm currently looking at a 1998 GSX, with about 65,000 miles on it. I have emailed the guy and this is the email I received in return, with some personal things deleted. He's asking for 4800 and willing to ship it here for me. It seems too good to be true, I replied asking him more questions about the car, and for the VIN for a carfax, etc. Is there anything I need to do or can do to make sure this is a real deal and not a scam? And how would we go about doing a third party, I didn't quite understand what he ment on that one. Seems too good to be true? Is it? Pics coming

This is 1998 MITSUBISHI ECLIPSE GSX, 65,870 mi, manual, 2.0L, garrage kept, no scratches, no dents, excellent condition!
This car runs and drives great. The transmission shifts like a dream. This vehicle's engine is in perfect working condition, no mechanical problems. Oil pressure is good.
All mileage are highway mileage. No accidents. No paintwork. All power and optional equipment work perfectly.
This vehicle is perfectly sound, no known defects. All electrical and optional equipment on this vehicle are in perfect working condition. The modifications are very mild, we try to leave the cars as stock as possible. They include:
- Full 3” Turbo Back Exhaust
- ATC 2100 Clutch
- Greddy Upper Intercooler pipe
- Greddy Type S Blow Off valve
This car is in great condition. You will receive the car along with title, bill of sale and receipt that you need, everything signed, ready to register it in your name.
You will receive he car with clear title, keys, and owner manual. The car will be shipped on my expense. If you're interested to buy my car I'll need your full name and adress to arrange the shipping.
I check my email quite often and i'll wait for your reply. For this transaction we should use a third party so everything go smooth and safe. As for the shipping dasautoshippers its just fine.
P.S.: The total amount would be $4800

It's a beautiful car in very good condition, but I would exercise great caution in buying something that you haven't physically seen. I would visit it in person to make sure that it is what he says it is. Also, you want to pay him directly and not deal with third parties if you can help it. I don't mean to be cynical, but parts of this sound a bit shady.

Be careful and if he declines an offer for you to physically see it, then he's full of it.

Let us know how it turns out,

Andy

problem is its 2000+ miles away :( Finding a GSX in good condition unmodded is so difficult :(, If I find someobdy who lives near this guy, would anybody be able to take a trip out there and check it out for me?

hmmmm, I found a 1995 for 4400 that is about a half hour from here, problem is mileage isn't listed, thats not a good sign :( I'll give the lady a call tomorrow.

Ok, just got off the phone with a guy about the 1995 GSX, said its got about 105k, is that too much? or still workable? Listed at 4400, I think thats a reasonable price. No reply back from the guy with the white eclipse, but i'll let ya know.

Im going to have to say that the offer is too good to be true. A GSX like that one around here would easily cost 10grand, and thats sticker price. I've seen GSXs that look like they've been through rough times that are more expensive, but thats just my .02

If you notice on the front bumper, there is a little thing on the top of the opening that isn't colored the stock paint color from the factory. His is painted white, its usually like a satin black. No paint work my ass.

Here's an example of what I was saying:

Yes, I agree with not even considering to buy this car until you've seen it in person. 4800 for a 98 GSX in that "supposed" condition and mileage should easily go for twice that. Like you said, "It seems too good to be true" and it usually is. A couple things I noticed besides the painted plastic trim on the front. The antenna/motor is broken. See it partially sticking up. There are some missing panels, notice no speaker covers in the back and a missing panel in the trunk. Also, in the engine bay on the radiator hose it looks like oil or something sprayed on it and dripped down. So obviously everything is not in perfect operating condition like he stated. Also (correct me if I'm wrong) is there any way to prove from the pictures that it is a GSX and not a GS-T?

Ah well, i'm looking at a 95 GSX w/ 105k Mileage on it for 4400. Seem like a good grab? What do a I need to do to the engine w/ that many miles? time for a rebuilt?

What condition is the car in? Ask him if you can do a compression test, Miles aren't too bad, but better safe then sorry. And as always, be strong and try to talk him down a bit. That would sweeten up the deal a bit.

Yah, gonna try for 3,800ish or so, haggle him up from there. What all is needed for a compression test?

You need a compression tool which will cost anywhere from free from a friend or about $25 from autozone. This will come in handy later on, so its a good idea to have one. A ratchet extension and a socket for the spark plugs. Take one out, screw tester in, crank it up and read numbers. do this for all four and hopefully you get good numbers across the board the match. Good luck :thumb:

Ah well, think the guy w/ the GSX flaked out, hasn't emailed me back, musta been a scam
