just got my kid brother 95 gsx for christmas with a bad motor ...just want to rebuild it to get it running ..in the future we will build it ...but for now...i was looking around for an OEM rebuild kit for a 6-bolt swap were doing and wanted to see if this kit was any good

90-92 PLYMOUTH LASER TURBO 2.0 ENGINE REBUILD KIT 4G63T - eBay (item 330498282341 end time Jan-17-11 18:17:30 PST)

if you guys feel this kit is no good please direct me in the right direction and my budget is $1k-ish which has to include parts and machine work thanks!

What actually blew? Honestly, i wouldnt use 95% of that stuff but a gasket here and there.

Are the pistons/rod/crank still good.

If your talking serious budget, advance auto/napa/auto zone stuff is par enough.

You definately want quality bearings
AutoPart store timing belt is fine for stock performence
Oil pump??? Your supposed to replace them just cause its a bi*** to do anyother time. And expensive.
Autopart store head gasket set. 2g need always need new bolts, 1g can be measured to see if they are in spec
The gasket kit most/all the gaskets/seals you will need.
Water pump?? eh. probally fine. Replace if necesary.
Do balence shaft elimination for cheap insurence/ probally cheaper then replacing anyways

If the rotating assemply is

There is a couple cylinder head parts in there, what is the current state of that?

Get a haynes manual. Follow all steps to precise, MAKE SURE EVERYTHING IS IN SPEC.

well heres the little history on the 6-bolt...i pulled it out of a laser turbo ..the junkyard says "it runs" i forgot to check the cluster to see how many miles on the chassis ...so i was gonna check the compression on the motor ..BUT even if it checked out the motor is 18 years old ...im afriad it will run for a week then blow..i rather machine the motor with oem parts to be safe and better relaibility..

BTW what makes you believe that those parts are no good?..

I know I may get some shit for this but this is the exact kit I used 10k miles ago to rebuild my motor Mitsubishi Eagle Plymouth 2.0L Full Gasket Kit 4G63/T - eBay (item 300499775202 end time Dec-31-10 18:52:04 PST) . I picked up a MLS head gasket from parts dinosaur, a set of ACL race bearings for the crank and rods, some piston rings from I dont remember where, water pump , and timing belt kit (belt and new pulleys), while I was in there I put ARP head studs in. That kit was a great starting point to make sure I had all the basics as far as gaskets go, and I then I was able to decide what I wanted to upgrade which was pretty much just the head gasket, and to date nothing leaks, I've had no problems so far.

There are somethings that you cant cheap out on. Research and design has been put into all part oem or aftermarket namebrand ie, arp, acl, cometic.

Gaskets are one thing. ^^^ that kit i would take for a stock rebuild minus the head gasket. I would have definately bought that if i want going for a decent amount of power.

Mechanical parts are enother. Pistons, lash adjusters. Hell, OEM couldnt even get that right.

I would say there are 3 big reasons engines go, bearings, timing, head gasket.

Timing belt and head gasket are weak points in the 4g and if they dont work perfectly, they dont work at all, and when they dont work, well... nothing is soon about to work.

The bearings now. Well. They wear. then they spin. I personally chose ACL race bearing. They are proven researched technology. Your weight of all your power is on these. I would trust OEM too, but they honest probally cost more. IDK.

I guess a good rule i am trying to get at, if it moves, get something trusted and proven. Ifs not, its not to hard to make a rubber ring or a paper gasket.

Take apart the engine. Check the specs of the crank, rods, pistons and walls/block. If they are good,

replace:
gaskets~$50-100 ebay
bearings ~100-200 perfomence vender
timing ~$50-100 auto parts
Head Gasket $34 autopart store

oil pump if you can $100 autopart store. an ebay oil pump may work, idk exactly how they work

If crank, rods, pistons and walls/block, arent good, replace used for cheap as needed.

Im forgeting about rings, idk know about those.

arrg im very conflicted ... if it were up to me i would fully build this thing with forged everything!!...but its not and now im on the partsdinosaur.com putting an engine kit together ....but not sure quality of partz.. here is thier site
4G63T Mitsubishi 2.0 DOHC Turbo Engine Rebuild Parts

i diffenitly will go with better bearings

do rods go bad? alot of these sites dont offer new oem rods

Um, they can crack i guess. Get used rods. As long as you dont thrash on it, stock should be enough. I doubt they are bad anyways.

^^^ They seem pretty legit.
