Need last minute advice on porting 14b - with before pics

Hey everyone im trying to gather as much info on porting my 14b im getting more and more confident on the actualy porting itself and hopefully i can get my hands on a carbide burr this weekend. But i have pics now on what and where i should port. Here is the pics of my 14b thats already been ported on the exhaust inlet side already with the step taken out of it.

To me the previous owner did a pretty good job on taking the step out but i plan on porting a little bit deeper into the exhaust inlet as far as i can just to take it one step further. Now the wastegate passage, as im looking at the photos do i take out the sudden turn that the exhaust gases have to take when it goes through where the flapper is into the o2 housing? I havent taken off the o2 housing yet although ill probably do that in the next couple of days if i can get a carbide burr here locally.
 
Are you planning on porting the manifold and turbine housing to 7cm2, or is it 7cm2 already? It's hard to tell in the pic angle you took.

If it's a ported 6cm2 housing, just knock the sealing ring lip out of your manifold with a die grinder and you'll have a nice full-flow 6cm2 manifold to turbine housing junction.

If you're trying to direct the most airflow toward your wastegate hole, try grinding the area above the wastegate hole into a "D" shape, leaving a little lip at the bottom of the wastegate passage....like this:

I normally port all of my housings that way slightly....especially the Evo III's as they're well-known for their poor wastegate system at boost in the 12-18psi range:

Ok thats a great pic im going to use that as a reference if you dont mind. :D And i just want to get the concept down - You basically take out that abrupt turn the exhaust gases have to take and make the radius going into the wastegate a bit more smoother and possibly open up the passage way a little bit? Should i order a 34mm flapper just incase or if done right i shouldnt need the flapper at all? My car has already been down for almost 2 weeks due to money problems but now i got some cash so i want to get this done. Thanks for the pic and the advice! Im pretty sure ill be back for more advice LOL
 
Yea toofast i did read up on vfaq about porting, but to me the pics are kinda hard to make out so thats why i came on here to get some first hand opinions from people that have actually done it. Like i said the more i read up on it the more confident i get.
 
The 34mm flapper and ported wastegate hole would be an insurance policy, although it would come with a price tag (only a problem if you're trying to stay super low-budget). FP has them, and they can be installed in about 30 seconds. Be sure to do any wastegate hole porting with the old 31mm flapper removed....it makes getting the die grinder in there much easier!
 
I forgot to ask, in your pics, are those cracks on the inside of the housing?
 
Yea and im glad you brought that up Toofast....would those cracks be a problem? I looked at them, but im not sure how deep they are. Although they are rather long in my opinion. I have the money for another turbo, but i want to make this one work for me. If i buy a brand new turbo it would certainly put me back financially once again which isnt an opinion.
 
Cracks are no good for the turbo. 14bs typically develop small hairline cracks in wastegate area, but yours looked pretty extensive in the turbine inlet. You can try and port and polish the inlet a little bit more and see if they dont clear up. If not, youll at least need a new turbine housing.

You do NOT want to put a 34mm flapper on a 14b. They dont boost creep, they barely hold over 18psi above 6k as it is. A bigger flapper will just blow open easier and hurt it's boost holding capability even more. Porting the inlet to match a 7cm gasket wont do anything either. Just port to remove the step and do the same on the manifold (unless you're running an EVOIII or aftermarket manifold that's already got a larger hole.
 
So i shouldnt touch the wastegate passage then? Im a little confused here now. The step in the exhaust inlet is taken out. Ive read here on tuners that 14bs do boost creep due to the bad wastegate passage design. So now im officially confused.
 
Thats your preference! If your only going to run 15lbs, i would do it. If you plan on running 18psi+, then i probably wouldnt.
 
Thats all im going to run for right now, i dont have the mods to run 18+psi although i wish i did would make things a lot easier. But for right now ill have to port it or look for another turbo just like a t28 or something if i come across one thats cheap because since the cracks might be a problem thats making me look for more options.
 
they sell 7cm housings for replacement. They sell some on ebay for less than $100 but i have no first hand experience on them so cannot comment on quality
 
Hmm did some research on finding one and heard its a little bit hard to find them. Found one from MAchV but whoa too much! For that price i can buy a used t28 LOL Hmm ill try to port the one i have to find out if the cracks are bad or not.
 
If you have the money, you might as well look into a bigger turbo, the 14b isnt exactly an LS1 destroyer
 
any of the 16g variants will be direct bolt up(if you have 2g install kit) and will still give you a nice increase in power at anything 10psi and up
 
my 14b will actually creep to about 18-19 if its set at 15. I just wish it would creep from 20-23psi! That's also with a 2.5" downpipe
 
Congrats on the housing find. The 7cm housing will yield a top end gain over 6cm housing.
