Hey guys, I am needing a new radiator for my GSX "Auto". I have never un-installed, or re-installed a radiator before so Im kinda lost when it comes to trans coolers and such. I was looking at this radiator on ebay "I have read great reviews on it, thats why im even considering it!!". Most of these performance radiators say "Manual only". What would I need to do to make this radiator work? Is the extra stuff needed very difficult to install? I have been searching the forums but I havn't seen my exact issue yet?

Thank you very much in advance!

I never heard of that problem to be honest with you. They should work. Radiators are really easy to take out and install. Yours should have a little drain plug at the bottom drivers side just un twist it and drain your old coolant out. Put your new one in, hook up the fans and put coolant in. Hope that helps !

Well, from what I have been reading, auto's have something different in them because the tranny works harder. Every performance rad I look at says Manuals only. I am wondering how hard it is to convert?

You can get a manual only radiator, but you will have to get a separate trans cooler. Just my experience, but an aluminum radiator and an IPT trans cooler, cost about as much as a stock auto radiator. Ymmv

I went ahead and bought that radiator on amazon for about 120$. I was reading some of them have built in transmission coolers. I will just use the plugs. If you don't have a auto, you just keep them plugged up. Correct me if im wrong someone haha

Hey I am autoo to I would prefere to get the cxracing radiator then that one on ebay payed $80 for mine eather way they work just fine even the oem one . Just get new rubber trans cooler line and reroute your stock one. I got a nice B&M cooler for the trans and mounter it behind the radiator where the fan it to keep temps low. Because the stock one runs through the bottom of the radiator you need run a different setup. This what I got STM AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION OIL COOLER KIT | 90-99 DSM

My stock trans cooler wasnt in the radiator, but in the vast majority of cars that is where they normally are. You should have a auto trans cooler on the drivers side opposite of where the side mount intercooler is

I just put my car on ramps to do some looking around, and I actually have the cooler on the radiator. I will just use that one if I am able to take it off.

I would suggest getting a new, larger, better cooling atf cooler to be honest. If not, there will be a day you'd need or want to upgrade it, and wish you did it while the radiator was out.

Use of a Manual Radiator in an Auto Eclipse

There will be no provisions for the trans cooler on a Manual Radiator. you will need to Install an after market Trans cooler. It's pretty simple. After you have decided where to Put your external cooler, It has an Input, and output. Kinda hard to screw up 2 lines. After installation check to make sure your auto trans fluid is at the correct level since you are bound to lose/and gain some.

Ehhh... 2g a/t turbo dsm's all have an external transmission cooler. I have yet to see one that is incorporated into the radiator; maybe the early 95-96 had them but definitely not they 98-99.

Its pretty simple to find out if yours is external or not. The external transmission cooler is located in front of the A/C condenser on the lower driver side and its about 4x8 inches long just in case you are having a hard time finding it.

^^ yea,
Ive got a gst that was swapped by the previous owner(i guess) and when i was tearing in to it i found the tranny cooler. Drivers side. I think the manual rad will work. Just took mine out for a drive with the cxracing rad and stock fans. Cruise at 186*. CX makes a pretty good radiator for the $. http://www.ebay.com/itm/95-99-ECLIP...ipse|Submodel:GST&hash=item5891cf73e9&vxp=mtr

People may be confusing the 2g 420a tranny cooler. Now that WAS in the radiator i believe.

Any GSX produced for MYs mid-late 97, 98 and 99 all have a cooler built into the radiator. Reason being, our charcoal canister sits in that particular spot on the driver's side. So no, not all autos have a separate cooler. I can't say for sure on 95- early 97s but many of them did come this way as well. Their charcoal canister is under the battery.

Let us know how that Godspeed radiator works for you. I would not buy another Godspeed product personally. The radiator I bought did not fit at first (had to grind down both sides), and did not cool as well as an OEM radiator (living in Tucson, it was easy to tell).

It is HIGHLY recommended that you pick up a name-brand aftermarket transmission cooler it you plan to do any racing at all. Heat is an auto trans's worst enemy. A good cooler can add years to the life of your transmission!!

You may be confusing the oil cooler located on the driver's side for the tranny cooler. If you look at a stock rad( not an aluminum type) there will be nipples located under the fan shrouds and rubber hoses attached. These are the tranny cooler lines.

On 2G turbo autos, likely only the FWDs based on some other members responses, the oil cooler that you are referring to in front of the driverside wheel is indeed a transmission cooler(unless of course it's an aftermarket oil cooler setup paired to an evo 3/8/9 ofh). No 2G came from the factory with an air to air oil cooler. Some 2g autos did get an air to air tranny cooler installed in that area. It's one of the main reason most short route fmic kits claim they won't fit autos. There would be hardlines running parallel to the radiator into the cooler on the driverside, directly in the way of the short route piping.

As stated earlier, all late model GSXs will for sure have the cooler built into the rad due to the charcoal canister's location. My CC has been eliminated to make way for an oil cooler. With the lack of a smic, I have located an air to air cooler for the tranny in the space it conveniently left for me.

I bought my GSX off the showroom floor. Mine has a factory air to air oil cooler, and a Tranny cooler located inside of the radiator. So unless someone snuck into my garage in the middle of the night and upgraded my Eclipse. i don't know what to tell you.

It was an Early build Mar-94, Has ABS, and LSD, No sunroof,an Eprom ECU,Large Vented rear Brakes, Power leather interior, but no power antenna. I'll be happy to post pics if you really need visual proof.

In Fact Take a look at my Gallery, you'll see a larger Pic of my front end. Allt he way to the right is the OIL cooler, and under the FMIC is where the tranny Lines leaked Fluid while Putting in a new Radiator W/internal Trans cooler.

Looking at the pics, that is the transmission cooler. The lines run directly across the radiator and plug into the cooler with rubber lines. Right above the oil spot on your floor is where the rubber lines would meet the hard lines that cut across the radiator. The transmission coolers are also vertical, in the same exact orientation in the one you have in your pics. As a reference, 90' external coolers are horizontal and have the fittings on the bottom. '90s and early '91s are the the only years to come from the factory with an air to air oil cooler.

Unless you have some factory one off, every 2G is equipped with the coolant based oil cooler.
