So, I was driving in 5th gear and the car just shut off and when I turned it back on it backfired a lot then shut back off. I’ve had issues with the car shutting off right at idle have assumed it was a coil problem so I replaced the coil in the distributor and it was still doing it.

I got the car home and figured out I wasn’t getting any spark to all 4 plugs.

I currently have the distributor taken apart and noticed that the disc has a little hot spot on it where it runs through the ICM. I have tested my CDI as well and the ohms read back as normal. Could it be my ICM that went out and it’s causing wrong fuel loads at initial start to where it shuts off immediately and as to why it lost spark while driving?

If anyone knows much on the overall distributor and its internal pieces that would be very appreciated, i haven’t been able to find a whole whole lot on it in my last couple weeks of searching.
Thank you.

From the little I know about the 4G37 the distributor with it's built in power transistor and coil seem to be troublesome the ECU's used with them suffer the same capacitor leakage problems as the 4G63 versions. Make sure it's functioning before you spend too much time elsewhere.

Is that a hot spot or rubbing on something?

I believe it was a rubbing spot on something else and it cause it to fry something. Nonetheless I got a distributor out of a junkyard and I’m getting spark again. Now i’ve run into a completely timing issue where I don’t know how to get the car to stay running. I have the motor at tdc and from what i can tell the rotor button is facing cylinder #1 but it won’t start and stay on.
