i got a 99 gsx and my 1st gear wont syncronize unless im from a stop otherwise its grinds and i hav to be really nice to the tranny to put it in second and 5th otherwise it grinds. i think the tranny fluid might be low but i dont know were or how to check it and i hear its hard to do? the cars got 78xxx miles on it. i remember on my 95gs i could slam the gears all day long and nothign bad would happen and that thing had 170xxx on it

u know i have the SAME exact problem but i can slide it into first if im pressing on the break like im going to a complete stop with the car not going any faster than 20 mph.

My buddy who has a 97 GSX, had the same problem and replaced his clutch and put different bushings in, and it fixed the problem.

I will be replacing my clutch this weekend, probably by sunday i can pm you and let you know if replacing my clutch fixed this problem. My clutch is bad, so this just kinda fits into seeing if this will help.

yeah this dsmer from work said replacing the clutch ball and fork fixed his problem buthes got a GST. also i still would liek to know were to find the place to put the tranny fluid in

Gear grinding is a synchro problem. Possible worn synchros or wrong fluid? Bad clutch is plausable but most bad clutches either won't let you put it in gear at all as the tob won't engage the fingers well enough or slips under acceleration Old 1g's are world famous about synchros. Not all that hard to replace if you ever been in a trans but if you haven't been inside I woudn't do it unless some one who knows is helping.
