Need help determining if lifters are good or not

I'm in the middle of a motor rebuild. My question is about the lifters. About 5 of them I can easily move up and down. The other 11 I can barely move at all by hand. Inserting a paperclip doesn't really help moving them either.

Which ones are bad? heh

are you absolutely sure you're getting the paper clip all the way into them. try it with all of them, the paper clip goes almost to the bottom of the lifter. when the paper clip is at the bottom and pushing on the piece it needs to be on the top of the lifter (where hte hole is) can be pumped to pump the oil out.

a filled good lifter should be just slightly spongy when pushed on, that means its pumped up with oil but not frozen. a super soft lifter means its not pumped up with oil or emptied out, during a rebuild you should empty them all out and have them pump back up both to fill them up with new oil and to prevent any possibility of a valve/piston orgy if you are reusing old stretched out valves
