I recently bought a 97' Eclipse RS, 5-speed Manual FWD, it had a knock, and I was planning on rebuilding the engine.

After some research I came to find out that the 420a is incredibly hard to find parts for and considering I would have to buy a 28-year-old used engine from a scrapyard, I wasn't too excited on keeping the 420a. My goal is to have a car that is well balanced between performance, longevity, capable of doing relatively long drives, maybe 300hp would be nice (considering my daily has 150hp, idk if that's too much or too little), I really just want it running and not planning on taking it to a strip.

After days of scrolling on the forums and looking at stores online and the ones that are linked at the bottom, I want to do a 4g63 swap. I do believe it will be pricey, but I want to have a "new" engine that will run well and last me some years. I think I'll have to get an engine from a scrapyard for the blocks, other than that I have no idea what parts to get and where to start, I'm relatively new to building engines myself so any help/tutorials would be nice. I'm also not sure if I can keep the transmission.

FYI this is a 3-man project.

No you cannot keep the transmission. As for finding a 4g63 at a scrapyard, that's not exactly easy either. As stated its easier and cheaper to start with a 4g63 car. If you want a 4g63 car, scour classifieds and be ready with cash and a trailer. Do not wait if a good car pops up. The last one I bought last fall had offers within the first hour of posting. Thankfully I was first.

If you truly want to try this you need at a minimum, engine, transmission, axles, wiring harness, clutch, clutch hydraulics, ecu, motor mounts, trans mounts, speedometer sensor, shifter cables....that's a short list. This is before any fabrication work etc etc.

Alright, so it isn't recommended? Then do any of you know any good websites to find new parts for the 420a.
By the way, the reason is because it had a knock and when I was in 1st and 2nd gear it ran but when I tried to go to third, it died. Is that a transmission problem or probably because I threw a rod?

There is no way for us to answer that question. You will need to perform some diagnostics.
