I just installed my boost gauge recently and I noticed that my boost goes to around 12 psi and then spikes up to around 16. Sometimes the boost stays at 16 and other times it will go back down to 12. What can cause this? I am currently stock except for intake, Type RS BOV, and 3" Megan Racing Cat-back exhaust. And as for a boost leak test, I would have performed one but jaredgsx (a member from this site) ripped me off and charged me $20.00 and won't return my e-mails or to the paypal claim that I filed  . He is a fraud and should be kicked off dsmtuners. :notgood:

It creeps from like 10-12 at WOT, but spikes to 15 or so after shifts. I was told there was nothing I could do other than porting, and I don't feel like taking all that stuff off if I'm not replacing it with something better.

Well if you dont feel like pulling all apart to do some porting or buying a external wg then your gonna have to deal with it. Otherwise put your stock exhaust back on, casue thats really the only way it will go away. Or atleast put your stock dp back on and that should help some what.

what is needed to run an external WG?

The boost gauge reads past 20 psi now when I put the gas to the floor. Am I better off not driving it for now? It is my daily driver but I have a backup so I don't NEED to drive it.

Well you first need to decide where you want to mount your wg, you can mount it at the manifold collector. they have them mounted on the manifold and mounted to the O2 housing. which ever you decide is really what determines what you need to buy in order to go with external wg.

I guess I need to just bolt on a 16G and save up for supporting mods (injectors, fuel pump, afpr, safc). No point in porting my stock crap when I plan on upgrading soon.

But how do you go about checking a wastegate? I'm sure mine is working since my boost doesn't do anything funny, but I figured I'd check to make sure.

Also, resetting the ECU, just disconnect the ground, correct?

Sorry for the hi-jack, just chimed in to get some extra info.

where exactly is the wastegate actuator and how exactly do i check it?

In this picture the WG actuator is circled in green. The nipple for the actuator to reference boost pressure is pointed to by the red arrow.

To check the WG actuator:
Verify the rod coming off the back will move up or down. Verify that this rod is connected to a short lever on the turbine side (the lever is attatched to the WG flapper inside the turbo). Verify that when enough air pressure (should be about 10-12psi) is applied to the nipple (red arrow) the rod moves the lever on the turbine to open the WG.

the rod on mine doesn't move. it only moves about 4mm if that and I think that's just play. how hard to you need to pull?

The best way to check it is with air pressure applied to the nipple. If it still isn't working, I think you've just found your problem. New WG actuators can be had for reasonably cheap, you'll just have to shop around. That page was the first one I found, and I linked it even though the note at the bottom of the page says they're out of stock right now. You'll have to do the legwork...
-sorry.
Gotta go, I'm at work and the boss is calling.

yeah pull the hose off and aply air pressure to it and you should be able to see the the rod move. if the rod is not moveing then you the flaper is not openin and this is your problem.

I just bought a 92 tsi and took off the home made boost controller that was on it and put back to stock. When I put it to the floor it goes up to 10 psi then after about 4,000 rpm it goes up to 15psi. I'm guessing that is what you guys are calling boost creep? I do have a full 3" turbo back exhaust w/ no cat. Should I also port my wastegate or would it be ok to leave it the way it is?

Port it.
