Need Help Asap, Muffler Law Related!!

ok yesterday i got pulled over for my exhaust and i have till today to bring it to the police station w/ the stock one,or my ticket stays as loud muffler, i am gonna switch it back but i cant get the muffler off the exhaust piping i took the clamp off is their something i can do, i tried wingling it, but no go, help!!!!! and do they make universal silencers?

i know yeah its loud 3" turbo back to 4.5 tip no cat o2 dump yeah he was a dick and i was like i heard in ny ur allowed 90 dbl and he like start ur car and i did and he said yeah thats over 90 i should of said where the meter, o well, so does anyone know how to take muffler off heat it up

check with your local smog check station. I know in cali now they have been performing compliance testing on cars issued citations for noise. See if you can have it tested there and fight the ticket with proof in hand. -Matt

As far as I know its just the emissions station, but I live in AZ, so Im not 100% sure. Im sure a cali resident can clear this up. -Matt

Take it to any muffler shop and tell them you need a quieter one for a ticket. they offered to swap mufflers to a very restrictive one and back again after the sign-off for 30 bucks or so, or install a custom mandrel bent system for 250.
Ended up likeing their custom one more than my tanabe super medallion, and sold that to them. Came out of it with better almost free muffler.

EDIT: All the states that have noise-polloution laws differ slightly, but most restrict noise over an 89-93dB range. In cali it was 94 or so when i had my ticket, so you need to google for your states laws. And here it is legal for a peace officer to cite you for noise polloution if they think your muffler is too loud, on the basis that testing equipment is too expensive / hard to use / unecessary to have in each car. Much like they are "trained to estimate speed", they can estimate dB levels legally, tho they are often wrong.

I dont know how they do inspections, but if you show up with no cat and they see that, have fun.

i dont have to worry about having no cat the place where i take my car for inspections is a gas staion and they don't put it on a lift they just check for lights working and signal now if the cop looked undeth i would laugh but i just lowered it 2inch so i should be good, i am just gonna go to court plea not gulity and tell them i want a dbl test and i just bought a silencer so i should be fine

uhm- yeah.... still worry about the no cat issue... if you plead not guilty and ask for a test, they're going to check your car over end to end....

When I got popped for to loud an exhaustThe did an under-car test, 12 inches behind car adn 50 foot behind car. I think I was allowed 94Db but I hit like 120Db. ticket stood. but that is what I got for running a open 3 inch pipe off the collector. No cat, muffler, anything. it was also a 78 firebird so go figure....

If they have a manditory car check they jack you up. They go thru your engine bay and cite you for everything that dosent have a CARB number, it has something to do with california air emissions crap. Luckily the only thing they got miffed about was the k&n open air filter, but i got the carb number off their website. And they DO check under your car for a cat. I had to drive up a ramp so the CHP officer could see the cat on there, because "many times people remove them to make their exhaust louder." Then they bring out the dB meter from close up and back a ways. They test at idle and 3500 rpms, which another officer verifies(they let you rev it for them). Course this is in cali, and i had a real jerkoff officer do my inspection.

I came out of my modified exhaust ticket with a new 3" cat back( i couldnt get mine to stfu), but down a lot of $$.

Good luck man, wish i could say it was easy but its a real bi*** here in cali.

forgot to mention for more thing when he pulled me over and gave me the ticket he said ANY after market muffler is illegal but thats bullshit many places sell them, autozone, monro mufflers this can't be true?

i was gonna say that but his point was any after market is illegal so i guess if its loud stock its fine its bullshit but i doubt after markets mufflers r illegal like i said before many places sell them

I dont know if 'any' non-stock muffler is illegal, but when i got my ticket, it was for a modified exhaust. Many places sell legal replacements for the stock muffler, but alot just sell shiny things with big holes to kids and they do produce way too much noise.

My luck I came across one of those police barriers where they check 1:3 cars for DUI. I pull in, one of the cops came walkin up and says: "has anyone taken you yet?" me: "no sir." he says : "turn the car off for me please." *I turn it off*, he walks behind my car. 5 minutes later he comes up to my window, "its illegal to have aftermarket exhuast, its for show cars only, u have to tow this car if its a show car, you have 30 days to fix it"

i dont say shit, turn on my car and spool off. im just gunna put a temporary stock muffler on it, have one of the officers sign off, pay it then put my muffler back on

All states are different.


Motorcycles are supposed to obide by the sound law aswell. You will barely ever see it because most of them drive harleys themselves. Hell, even the police bikes are harleys.
