Ok my car has been down for 3 weeks due to a bad alternator. Its because one bracket wasnt tight and then the alternator was loose and it kinda burned out... Well the screw that goes into the bracket wont tighten, can anyone tell me if there is a nut involved or what piece we have to replace etc? would we be better off jbwelding this bracket back on? Thanks for the help. pics included.

As far as I remember, there is no nut involved. I think that bolt in particular was a pain in the butt because it's really long and the only way to get it out was to lower that side of the engine. Does it come out?

That bracket bolt (there is no nut) also goes thru the water pump and holds it on and needs to be tight to prevent leaking. It should be 65mm long (size 8X65) and be torqued to 17 ft.lbs. If someone put a shorter one in, that's your problem. If correct length but it keeps turning, then it is stripped. Replace bolt if bolt is stripped. Otherwise put in a helicoil with new bolt. JBWeld is not going to hold it and it will have to be removable anyway next time the water pump needs to be removed. (Also note: The position of the bracket is not correct until the alt. is in.) You will have to remove the alt. drive pulley to have clearance to remove the bolt.

thanks luv2, i just have a problem getting the pulley off, any special tricks you all know? the pulley keeps spinning when i try to take it off, ive tried 2 wrenchs but ill prolly bust a knuckle a few times before i get it off

What pulley are you trying to take off??

It's the water pump pulley for the alt. belt. Leave the belt on (tight) while loosening the bolts (and engine in gear) to help hold the pulley. Put a wrench on each of 2 bolts to help hold pulley still with one bolt while loosening the other bolt. Or if that doesn't work, hold the pulley still by putting a square rod (eg. screwdriver shank) parallel to the pulley over one bolt head and under the next while loosening a different bolt. If the rod wants to slip off, wedge a wooden block between it and the car frame/body.

when i was taking my waterpump pully off I had someone wrap the old belt around the pully and hold it still, thats assuming you can't tighten the belt up with your current situation.
