NA to Turbo ECU Question

The easiest would be to install a 91-94 turbo ecu, eprom is always preferred. Additional wires you will need to add to the harness is one from the ecu to a knock sensor and an additional wire from the ecu to the turbo maf. Wiring in the injector resistor pack is the only other wiring you should need to convert the n/a harness for a turbo application.

Quick awnser: In order of usefullness 1. 5 speed turbo eprom ecu. 2. auto turbo eprom ecu. 3. 5 speed turbo non eprom ecu. 4. auto turbo non eprom ecu. 5. non turbo eprom ecu.

Long answer :

If your planning on dsmlink, jackal, or a dsmchip, and turbo eprom ecu is good. Just make sure you get injectors and a fpr to match. This is becuase 5 speeds are compenstated for 450's and 37psi, auto's are compensated for 390's and 43psi.

If your not gonna get dsmlink, jackal, or a dsmchip, then a 5speed turbo non eprom ecu is preferable, although a auto ecu will work, a 5 speed is preferred.

Finally if your dead set on a eprom ecu, and can't find one, a n/t eprom ecu can be turned into a turbo ecu. It requires a junk turbo ecu to get parts from.

I've done the swap as well, and recommend an eprom ecu just like everyone else says. Locating a turbo non eprom ecu is also an alternative if your low on funds. You can aquire a non eprom for less then $50. I have one if you can't locate on, PM if your interested. The wiring listed above is also correct. You need the knock sensor, the 7th wire for the turbo maf, and the injector resistor pack wired in. The non turbo clutch will bolt up, but won't last long. How far along are you with the swap?

I'm trying still to source some of the parts but it is just going to be a stock turbo dsm. I'm using 450's, a 14b, ,stock turbo fuel pump, The clutch is upgraded I think to a stage 3, whatever that means. Everthing will basically be that of a GS-T. I don't know that an eprom will ever do this project any good. My other DSM on the other hand is the opposite.

You aren't going to be able to run that much boost on the non-turbo pistons. The n/t tranny won't hold up long either. I blew third gear at partial throttle. Transmission always shifted fine but just one day . . . BOOM

Like everyone else says it's a fairly easy thin to do. Just wiring in the resistor pack, and running an additional 2 wires to the ecu for the knock sensor and mass air.

Another thing, fuel pump probably wont last long either

Edit: Sorry I see you mentioned running the turbo fuel pump. I actually don't recommend the upgraded clutch on the 7 bolt motor. Mine crankwalked 14,000 miles after i turbo'd it. I was running a ACT2600 N/t clutch setup

The pistons can still take a beating, but you have to watch out for knock, and you dont really have to worry about your tranny, you have a 14b:tease:. Clutch? Yes get a better one, but make sure its for a n/t, and DO NOT worry about crankwalk, the chances of YOU(1gs in general) to get it is the same as ANY OTHER car.

Yea my 14b blew my tranny up ;)

Don't believe me take a look for yourself. . .

Another question to consider is how many miles is on the motor your trying to turbo.
From personal experience it's really not worth the amount of money/time your going to be putting into it unless your doing it for the learning experience. I'm one of the first 5 people who successfully turbo'd there NA. There was maybe 3 people on this forum that did it earlier. Ask Mavisky or TimG how there NA w/turbo motors are doing ;)

Also the NA pistons were not designed for boost. Yes. . . most cars can take a certain amount of boost but at some point knock will not matter. The ring lands are thinner and not as strong as a stock Turbo piston or a forged piston. Find a set and physically compare them.

I killed 3 nt transmissions. All ended up looking just about like the one posted above. Let this be a warning to those trying to cheap out on the conversion. All of mine died at 16-20psi on a turbo block mated to a nt trans with an nt specific act2600. The clutch could take all the power I could throw at it, the trans was another story. Each time 3rd gear would die.
