My turbo blew..Why?

So..I just installed my 14b turbo no shaft play what so ever on Fri..

Everything was going dandy..i have it set on 11lbs of boost and was enjoying life..

Today Tuesday i here a rattling noise coming from the turbo..take the intake off and i have no up and down shaftplay but A LOT of in and out.

What Happened?

What would cause this to happen..


Insufficent oil supply?

Insufficent Coolant Supply?

Just Bad luck?


Pleas Help

kinked oil drain line.... if it was ,thats the main reason why you blew your turbo seal

Are you sure you're responding to the right thread? I've already posted what caused this turbo to fail a day or so ago. I would know....I rebuilt it.

Yea i fixed it..im not actually that mad...just a lil down cause the car has been down for so long trying to straighten all of this out.

O well..she'll be running wednesday

I've rebuilt a couple hundred turbos- I know what oil coking looks like and what causes it....idling does not cause oil coking because the turbo never gets hot enough to burn and stick to the turbo's internals.

I also know what a freshly-rebuilt turbo looks like, and this one hadn't been touched in quite some time.

The nut simply came loose.....so after I rebuilt the turbo I used a fair amount of red Loctite on the shaft and torqued the nut to 100 in/lbs.

....the turbo also had a bolt broke off in one of the manifold bolt holes...and we did a hell of a job fixing it...haha thanks for fixing that 2 justin...!


i just wish i could of been there 2 see the final work cob, i be back when the snow melts!!
