Well today i was driveing my car and as always i got a squeeky altnator belt well it broke and i'll be dammed if peices didnt fly into my timeing belt and it broke  I noticed when i bought the 6-bolt it didnt have a timeing belt cover on it and i forgot to put it on till it was to late and already in the card so it had no cover from junk. And only thing i could think of that cause the timming belt to break was peices of the altanator belt So my ?' is what is the easist way to put another one on? It was preety ez out side the car but in the car is a whole other story.

sorry to hear that....i dont have my timing cover on either, i had it off one day and my nana saw it as junk and tossed it...this makes me scared to drive now LOL

It's not a hard job, and not really much different in the car than out. What I'd be worried about is the valves, they usually get bent when the t-belt breaks. My talon was at an idle when it broke and it still bent them all. You can get really nice ss valves on ebay for around 90-100 bucks. A valve job is another hundred at a normal shop, probably a lot more at a performance shop.

Yeah i hope it didnt get the values is there a way i could tell? i was'nt driveing fast when it broke i just started to take off from park and it broke

Most likely your valves are done. Mine broke at idle, and between that and the subsequent attempts to restart, I bent *at least* 4 valves. Best thing you can do is a compression and leak down test, and go from there.

worst part about this is you have to ask yourself, "do i wanna pull the head and check the valves, or put everything together then do a compression test?" honestly, to save time in the long run, I would pull the head and inspect the valves, plus, gives you a good reason to do head studs and a new headgasket (assuming you havent done that yet).

Sorry about your bad luck OP.

the car has a rebuilt motor on it which was only about 5k miles on it maybe a little more so it has a new head gasket on it

and i have no idea how to do a compression test on a car

couldn't i turn the cams by hand to tell if there bent cause u would think if there bent they would stick. I had a n/t in the past that had a trimming belt break and the shop said it could have bent the valves but it didn't also had a few other cars in the past while had broke and never had to replace valves on them.

Take the cover off and see if you can see any valve stems lower than others, esp if the lobes should be pushing these down, yet there is clearance under the lobes.

With your history of broken belts, I would recommend that a more preventive belt maintence procedure be in order to keep you from spending unnecessary money that you could be still in your pocket.

i got mine replaced 10k miles in advanced just on the safe side thats what you should have done but really sorry to hear that mate good lock with it and hope its ok

I pulled my head, and the valves looked fine. It wasn't until it was compression tested that I knew they were done. If the head isn't off yet, there is no putting everything together to check the valves. Pull the cams, do compression test.

Yeah it was a good belt on the car its just that id didn't have the trimming belt cover on and it got that broken alternator belt into it and screw it up I'm sure if it wasn't for that the trimming belt would had lasted.

Its odd cause i had the alternator belt tight and yet it squealed a lot and broke and the original 7bolt motor had the same problem squealed a lot and broke all the time I,m like WTF and on the 6bolt its all new stuff even new alternator so I"m puzzled to why it still happened in the first place.

Once i get it fixed I'm getting rid of that headache once and for all and start fixing up new new headache my 96 TSI

Having a belt too tight will cause it to squeal and break prematurely as well.

As already stated, you can pull the valve cover and visually inspect, but you won't know for sure. If rockers left their seats, you can sure as hell bet bent valves.

Save yourself the headache, and pull the head. Valves bend, even at idle. And buy a new timing belt cover while you are fixing the head.

take the valve cover off and feel the rockers and see if they are loose if they are then you bent the valves.

I will do that tommarow thanks and hope to god there not bent cause i really dont want to have to pull the head and get them fixed.

Just so you understand, it isn't a for sure way to diagnose bent valves. If the rockers look fine, and you put everything back together, but it won't turn over, you will have to undo all the work you just did.

The timing belt is off, it's not that much more work to remove the head. When a 4G63 timing belt goes, almost everyone reports bent valves.

Yeah i turn the cams all the rockers went fine push down the values just fine no sticking or anything every thing works fine on the top end. So im going to go with my instancts and put the belt on and if it works thats great if not then i just have to pull the belt back off which is easier then pulling the head cause i did the belt before but i have never did the head on this kind car.

I got another almost new timming belt that i got from another motor i will just throw it on there to save some $'s
