I'm not really schooled in DSM-ing and could use some wise tunig help
so i'm starting this thread to catalogue my project and ask for help.

My '90 N/T laser's air-con worked for a while, then a couple months ago it just quit. Also the push-button air-con selector switch doesn't always work, and this is definitely an issue in northwest FL when it generally tops 90 degrees daily! Other than recharging Freon, what else could be wrong?

Also my check-engine light is on, except when I accelerate fairly quickly it goes off, then when I level off the light comes back on, is that bad, or easily fixable

go to your auto parts store and buy a chiltons repair manual then go to walmart and buy an ANOLOGUE volt meter and it has to be anologue and hook it to pins 1 and 12 on your diagnostic port (they are the one in the top left and the bottom right and it will flash the code to you, then go to section 4-63 i think and look at what the code is and that is somewhere to start

There are a few elecrical items that all need to work for the AC system to function.

there is going to be a pressure sensor, a coolant temp switch, a magnetic clutch on the compressor pulley, a few fuses and relays. There are quite a few electrical items in the system that could fail beyond the switch on the dash. But if the light inside the switch isn't coming on I would start with fuses and the switch itself as that light works regardless of the actual mechanical systems.

His CEL light issue sounds like his EGR temp sensor is going goofy on him. (I would say knock sensor, but he's an NT .. )

I'd call the switch in the dash is pooping out as well - why his AC has died.

-good luck - DSM

once the system reaches a critical level the pressure switch will not allow the clutch to engage on the A/C compressor. You will need to find the high pressure switch and usually make a jumper wire to manually engage the clutch while your filling the system. If the system is too low the A/C wont blow cold and this would make it appear like your switch isnt working.

well my dash switch was working, then suddenly quit:ohdamn:(we checked continuity on the contacts and everything), so my dad and I went to the junkyard and ripped a few out of some junkers then one of the good ones we got crapped out too. and as for all the other stuff my dad probably is just going to take the car to an aircon guy and he can do all that real specific technical checking and adjusting.
