I searched for a while, did not find my answer.

I started my car and it ran for about 10 seconds, i took it around the block for like 1 minute max (my block is small). I come back, turn off the car, open my hood, and my headers are freaking burning, literally, they're really hot.

Is this okay that they're really hot? Or is something wrong with my headers?

btw, my headers have some kind of wrap around them, the guy I bought it from put them on, he said it reduces heat.

Is this safe? I checked my engine, its fine, but the only thing that is hot as hell is my headers.

I do not have a turbo installed. (my engine is .40 bored over though, if that makes a difference)

Thanks for your response guys!

*SHORTENED POST* (if you're lazy to read my newbie post)

My headers are very hot after 1 minute of driving.

have you ever seen an Exhaust Gas Temp gauge?

Your exhaust is probably anywhere from 800-1000 degrees. That means your manifold is going to get pretty hot too.

This is normal. The EGT gauge would tell you what the temps are but you already know they're going to be hot. They will usually be around 800F or so and then at WOT or cruising at highway speeds they'll be around 1300F. The headers are the first place outside of the engine that sees these temps so they're going to be the hottest part of the exhaust system.

As for the wrap, that is to reduce heat. It is called header wrap.

1st of all, update your profile and if you don't have turbo, don't pretend in your profile like you do! Your EGT should be around 1000* depending on where you tap it and at what point. Your header should be hot as it's the hottest part in the exhaust system. As long your EGT's aren't over 1400* i'd say your fine.

Thanks for the response guys, I did not know that they're supposed to be that hot.

The header was already cracked on top alittle, I guess its from overheating, but the guy took care of that crack before I bought it. I guess they're just that hot :D Anyway, thanks guys, btw I'm not pretending to be a "cool" guy to whoever said to take the turbo out of my profile, I do have a turbo setup, its just not installed. I am having some problems with white smoke right now, hopefully my gaskets soon will be replaced and then I can put the turbo in without any problems.

Just as a sub note that header wrap actually raises the temperature of the header. Thermal wrapping lowers under hood temps, but at the cost of higher temp within the header, as it acts like a blanket.

set your oven for 850 degrees and wait 10 min or so and open the oven door....feel the same?

vd96talon - I'm glad I could throw you some helpful info. As far as blowing smoke goes, that doesn't have anything to do with your header being hot. If the smoke coming from your pipe smells sweet, then you have coolant burning. I believe that would make the smoke a bluish tint, too, but I always confuse the colors. If it doesn't smell sweet then it's not your headgasket.

timot - I hear ya on the DD saturn. 1996 SC2, 199k miles and still runs strong :thumb: Hopefully in a few weeks I'll be into an AWD dsm daily driver.
