my first turbo dsm

hey guys.i finally got my first turbo dsm. its a 91 tsi fwd.it has 118,000 miles on it .i bought it for $1100. there is one problem tho. i think the turbo is gone but im not sure.if i rev it up to like 5k rpms it sounds like its spoolin up but i cant really tell. i dont hear the bov either. the boost guage doesnt move when i rev it up.does this mean the turbo is done

You wont see boost while free revving you engine at a stand still..It needs a load to create boost..You will know your turbo is done if you get blue smoke out your exhaust or if your turbo sounds like a screaching cat when you boost it....You can also check for shaft play..

Is your car modded? Would be nice to know what kind of BOV and intake you have. Fill our your mod list when you get a chance also. I know that I couldnt hear a damn thing with my car till I gota different BOV and intake. When I took off my old intake I could see where the old BOV dumps in, and there was a long tapered rubber tube in there. That thing made the air sound almost impossible to hear.

the car is completely stock .im gonna fill out my pofile as soon as i get my awd tsi

Normally you wont hear a stock BOV by just reving the motor. If you drive it and apply some boost and let off the gas quick enough you will hear it. The stock 1g bov is a bit faint with no mods done.

If you really want to start hearing it you need to get a better intake. The stock rubber intake really deadens the sound of the recirculated air. I have a home depot 3" intake right now and it made a huge difference in the the sound of the bov.

For the turbo being blown, take the car out, give if a bit of a load on the road, if you hear a nice almost metal to metal sound, then its time for a new turbo or rebuild. My old 14b started to sound like this before it ate a .5" square piece of rubber. Now you cant hear that noise, just the high pitch whistle from the bent fin on the compressor wheel.

Nice find and price on that 1g. Dont get discouraged by it, these things will take good care of you if you do the same.
