Hey guys im new to the forum, the names mike im only 18 but started working on cars when i was about 14. I have always been a car guy i had a 72 grandprix, i also have a 1997 civic ex built turbo, and a 1990 nissan 300zx.
last year my buddy bought his first dsm a 1990 eclipse gs in awesome shape, timing belt went on him one day shot 2 rods out of the block and 8 bent valves. helped him rebuild it and just fell in love with dsm's and thats when i started to look.

i wanted a 1g car i just like the body style better, i started looking in about september and didnt really find much, until last week came across a 1992 talon tsi awd. car had 108,500 miles has a full 3" exhaust turbo back by magnaflow and brand new struts front and rear, body was in good shape everything was there and it came with extra parts always a plus. only problem is it sat for about 4 years. so i took a 2 hour drive to brooklyn last monday and ended up buying the car. i went up sunday to pick the car up and it wasnt easy car was frozen to the ground do to 3 flats, and wouldnt hold any air at all to even roll the car. got home and took me and 4 of my buddys to push it off of the trailer.

today was the first day i actually got to take a good look at the car in the day light, put it up on jack stands pulled the crappy stock tires and rims off and all of the brake components. pulled the spark plugs and replaced with new ngk's, drained the gas tank checked all the fluids and threw a battery in it. now when i went to look at the car i couldnt really get to it so i didnt even know if it cranked i was just going by what the seller said. so i turned the key and cranked :)

i didnt hear the fuel pump going looked into it and they have an aftermarket pump i dont know what kind but there is a relay in the trunk for it and its pretty hacked. i also didnt have any spark either, so i looked in by the ecu and there is no MPI RELAY :( as of now the car is sitting in the drive way until i get a relay which will hopefully be tommorrow.

after i get it running i wanna do
timing belt and accessory belt
wires (any suggestions of what wires work best would be appreciated)
fluid flush on everything
all new brakes
new rims and tires (already have set of 17" kazera wheels for it)
and basically all seals

if theres any maintence things i missed that you guys know of please let me know. i wanna get this car running good so i can play in the snow before it's all gone.

i will keep you guys updated on what happens with the car and if i get it running tommorrow

balance shaft bearings and water pump immediately come to mind, especially before upgrading the car's rims...

Intake pressure check or boost leak check is big. I found two major leaks in my intake as stated by jason.
Ill also second on NGK wires.

Hey man..don't worry about the balance shafts yet. Thats the last thing you want to worry about.

Get the ECU issue fixed (check your capacitors for leakage), drain/replace all the fluids, replace/check all belts, hoses, intercooler piping, seals, electrical connections, lights, compression test, leakdown test ect..... Basically go over your car with a fine tooth comb. Do all your maintenance to the car, get it running and see how she drives.

Then after that.....if she's running on her own strength..

proceed to this Tech Guide: 1G 4G63t Upgrades - DSMtuners

Good luck and have fun.

care to elaborate? while I haven't built a 4G63, I have built a couple G54Bs, and they all had balance shafts that spun at twice the RPM of the motor, thus being fairly susceptible to wear. considering you're looking at about $30 for replacement bearings/belt, I don't see why you would recommend not replacing them.

ive been using ngk plugs and wires for a while now and they are awesome!!:hellyeah:. compression test and a boost leak test would be on my list of first things to do, those are big power robbers:notgood:.

welcome to the dsm community btw :thumb:

I agree, balance shaft belt should be replaced with the timing belt,as well as the tensioner. No need to kill your engine for lack of replacing a $30 part, plus it's right there when you're changing the timing belt.

thanks for all the quick responses. im not gonna slack on the maintnence i wanna get everything done rite from the start.

so i picked up an mpi lastnite put it in the car today and still nothing. i noticed that the check engine light wasnt coming on and i know the ecu takes a crap in these all the time. pulled that it doesnt have any major burn marks but it looks more like corrosion on one of the boards. im gonna start looking for an ecu now and a guy i work with knows how to test the mpi relay so im gonna do that tommorrow and go from there

anyone with an ecu pm please
