yea i was planning on getting some arp rod bolts but wasnt really sure on how to install them. i heard you have to get the rods machined if you got them but im really unsure. And i plan on going with acl bearings.

Great to see another Texan doing a build. How fast do you want this build to go? I'm just finishing mine, and I started back in October of 08! I took my time. My advice would be to do the same. While you have the motor out, you have some decisions to make, and all the wish list parts don't have to be bought all at the same time. Definately take the motor all the way down to the block find a machine shop. Have it hot tanked and honed. Check out my thread. I've practically got everything but the kitchen sink in my build. BTW, I'll be visiting my aunt in Saginaw next month, if you want to meet up, let me know. Good Work. :thumb:

yup thats a stock side mount.... no FMIC for him.

You do not need to machine the rods to use ARP rod bolts. You can also use ARP main studs as well.

Also, while you have it apart, you can go ahead and put in some new freeze plugs.

Probably so you don't bang it up putting the engine back in...

If your banging the FMIC trying to put the engine back in then you are not putting the engine in right. You don't need to block off the FMIC with cardboard. If the engine is hitting the it, you are doing something wrong. Common people. FMIC's are located just behind the bumper cover.

Thanks for clearing things up with the rod and main bolts. And just to clear things up i do not have a fmic that what you are seeing is part of the A/C that i plan on removing here pretty soon. Thanks for all the post.

ok well im moving next friday and im in the middle of a build so i have to start cleaning up the garage tomorrow which i am not looking forward to at all. So my engine build will come to a slow down for the next week or so. :notgood:

But i am at a point where i need some guidance. i have the motor torn down to the block and plan on removing the main and rod bearings. This is where im a little confused. Do i have to remove the crankshaft and pistons to get to the top part of the main bearings? Im just kinda looking for a how to basically for disassembling the bottom end. i want to do this right and need some help from the experts. hahah

Thanks in advance,
Bryce

Just take out the mains. This will free up the crankshaft. Be careful! You will have to take the oil squirters out before you can pull out the pistons/rods/crankshaft. Once you get them out you can take out all the bearings and inspect everything.

ok well that sounds easy enough. how hard is it to reinstall the pistons, rods, and crankshaft? is this something i could do or should i just send it in the machine shop like this and have them check everything?

Thanks,
Bryce

ok well i have been doing some research and i think im going to have a shop build my bottom end for me. Im really looking into the frankinstein motor. Its only 1500 and it includes 1g big rods on 2g pistons bored .020 over, decked honed and hot tanked, bse kit, new main and rod bearings, and painted. Im going to research how well this motor actually performs. Anyone with experience with this motor please tell me about it.

Thanks
Bryce

All you need to do is take all the parts to the machine shop. They can check specs on everything and tell you what you need to have done; At minimum have them hone the cylinders and polish the crank. It is not hard to put the bottom end back together. You'll need assembly lube, a torque wrench, and piston ring compressor. A piston ring expander will make things a little easier, but you don't have to have it.

Ok with the move i have been really busy but things are starting to settle down and im ready to get back to work on the talon:hellyeah:

Well last weekend we moved the talon from the old house to the new one. It felt good to have the talon on the road again even though it was being towed. LOL But for the motor i decided im going to go ahead and build it. Im mating my 1g rods to new evo 9 pistons .020 over. They are preparing my block bored, freeze plugs, cleaned, decked, checking crank, everything. Then once they are done they are shipping it back for me to assemble:D A big Thanks to Jon at dsm graveyard for helping me out with this and for great customer service.

While im waiting for my block to come back im going to be cleaning up the engine bay. More pics will be up soon of my progress.

Well Im still waiting for my block to get back so in the mean time i thought i would remove the dash and work on some wiring. The guy before me tried installing an alarm and completly messed up and instead of fixing it or taking it somewhere to get it done he just shoved everything up under the dash. Once the dash was removed it looks like total chaos. spliced wires hanging uncovered, stripped wires everywhere. im surprised i didnt have a fire in the amount of time i actually drove my car. well here are some pics from start to finish enjoy.

Well while waiting for the motor i decided to completly strip the interior and freshen it up a little bit. Its funny how a simple balance shaft bearing going out can lead to me redoing my interior. Well i redid my headliner, sunvisor, and cleaned the carpet to almost as good as new. well here are some pics so enjoy.

My interior completly stripped. So much work ahead of me.

The headliner stripped of old cloth and glue.

The headliner relined and installed. Not perfect but looks alot better than it did. Over all i think it came out pretty well for my first headliner.

Well it has been awhile since I have updated and alot has happened to the talon since the last time i posted. I have removed the entire harness from the car and removed everything that isnt being used anymore ( a/c, cruise, relays, etc.) and also soddered all the places the harness had been spliced into. And while the harness was out I decided to go ahead and solder the safc into the harness.

Also I removed the clutch pedal assembly and replaced the clutch pedal and all the bushings and stoppers to freshen up the assembly. I put the clutch pedal assembly back in along with the entire engine harness and am now about to get the interior back together.

Last but not least got the block back from the machine shop and just waiting for my rods and pistons to get in.

And now onto the pics

DO yourself a HUGE favor. Get some simple green and clean EVERYTHING in the bay. Be careful around the rubber hoses and such as they will swell if you use the degreaser on them BUT it will make a huge difference in the look. Also try repainting the Kmember and scratched up areas rattle can will do the trick and make the new motor look ten times better :)
