Well, i just picked my 96' Eclipse up today from the shop and figured id let everyone know what happened, and why ive been out of loop for so long (if anybody cares, heh). I fried my rings, and cracked piston #1 in two spots, so i knew it was now or never.

The motor has been completly rebuilt, top + bottom. This also includes the little knick-nacks corresponding to this like the Timing Belt, WP etc.

10.5:1 JE Pistons
Eagle Rods
Crane 10's (street cams) keeping it mellow
Crane Valve Springs
Rings, gaskets
lifters
bearings
ported/polished intake + exaust manifold w/new stock-ported TB
and just about everything else internally.
Price (parts + labor) = $4,886.96

The motor has 23 miles on it now, and purrs like a kitten. Next step i figure is to run it with a 100 shot of nitrous for awhile until i have the cash for a turbo kit, when i will upgrade and shoot for about 15 lbs of boost, maybe a little less since i want to keep it on the safe side.
Humm, i figure if i missed something during this project someone will soon enough let me know what is it. :sneaky:

But you know what, after missing my car for the last 2 months or so...it just feels SO DAMN GOOD AGAIN to be able to drive it. Its like a new girlfriend in that respect i suppose. :rocks:

umm, I'm not so sure that running like 15lbs of boost with that high 10.5:1 compression ratio will be good :| That's why most of us get the 8.8:1 lower compression bottom end rebuild kits when we plan on boosting or upping the boost :dsm:

but hey, don't mind me. I'm just a newb that loves to type :rocks:

I'm sort of dyslexic so when I read that, I first interpreted "It's like having a girlfriend that I respect."

I was like WHOA WHOA WHOA, don't get ahead of yourself. ;)

BTW - Great job on the build. Keep us updated on the motors condition. Do you have anything done to the drivetrain itself to accommodate the power?

10.5:1 will handle just fine as long as its tuned right. Thats the least of my worries actually.

The tranny, despite having only 60K on it, is my real worry as i see it now as the weakest link.

10.5:1 is not safe on 15psi... I don't know where you heard that. You never want to raise compression when going with some kind of forced induction. I guess I'd be worried about the pressure in the cylinders from boost and high compression making detonation an issue.

More than compression is fuel when boosting. I've got 8.6:1... and that doesn't mean squat if I don't have the fuel. I have a Warblo 255 and a 12:1 FMU on stock injectors. This set up is good for 9 psi... no more. I hate this set up and can't wait to replace it.

The power your going to be pushing without the nitrous, your trans can hold no problem. The nitrous might work your stock clutch pretty hard though.

Good luck with your ride

ok... swap ya! I just need a 10gal fuel cell, Aeromotive 1:1 FPR, Aeromotive inline pump, Aeromotive inline filter, fuel rail with return, 550cc injectors, and a Megasquirt.... that should do in a pinch :thumb:

very informative... but retarding timing doesnt stop detonation. Detonation occurs without spark... retarding your timing is just making your plug fire later. I believe...may be wrong... our cars fire a 8 degrees BTDC. Making our cars fire later than that just causes the gasses to compress more before firing.

I know it can be done, but your going to have to run high octane fuel. Exactly what that link says. You can do it, just its going to take tuning and lots of thought. I would be really happy to see someone make a high boost and high compression 420a... so I am by no means discouraging it.

It's all about tuning.

As long there is is not detonation or knock, he can keep increasing the boost until there is. With only 91-93 octane at the pump it may not be able to handle 15psi. We will have to see once he gets his engine management and turbo in place.

Aye, im kinda broke after the rebuild LOL, but the rest will all be comming together soon enough. I spent alot of time asking questions and studying before i went ahead and decided on this route. Then I read and studied some more (hence studying threads 2+ years old).
With the rebuild out of the way now i can concentrate on the fuel system, timing, turbo selection and all the rest one piece at a time now. Im not looking to do this fast, im looking to do this right. Nor am i going to be (or want to be) the fastest car on the road.

This has honestly turned into a labor of love by this point. With all the money spent on this car (and 1/2 of everything in it having been STOLEN a few months ago!) i just dont feel i can go half-assed anymore on anything. Im happy when she is happy and peppy, and thats all that matters :thumb:

LOL, I read the same thing.

hey man, congrats on your new setup. So you feel a good difference with the cams?I would keep it at a lower shot of nitrous if i were you,but hey i'm not.I agree with most everyone on here that 15 psi will be dificult on pump gas.Like L2RTSiAWD said,as long as there is no knock... your good to go.

Honestly with the compression im aiming for 15psi max on race gas. As for daily driving on pump gas i would drop the boost to 10psi or so (or whatever i find to be within safe limits.)

Honestly theres no way to know how its going to run at 10 or 15 psi yet though untill the turbo is on the baby. From there its all tuning (and a little luck i would imagine). And yes, this car is also my daily driver (hance why the cams/compression are rather mellower than they could be in all honesty if i had gone full nitrous or drag grind on em)
