Motor squealling at start-up

Check your alternator belt that it is not rubbing something. Mine was and I had to use a pry bar to pull the Alt. back to prevent it from squeaking.

Yeah, it sounds like your alternator belt. Especially if it does it when it's extremely cold out. Do what Jebus said, but also rub the underneath of the belt. Might be wearing out as well. Should feel mostly smooth and not rigid.

unless you tightened the belt within the first couple times that it squealed, it's probably no good anyway...
get yourself all new accessory belts and the noise should be gone (if you tighten the belts properly)

Yeah mine did/does that too. My belts are in great shape. So I just got some belt dressing and used that. Worked great until it decided to downpour about 30 minutes afterwards and now they squeal again..... So if it dries up again i'll put some more on it.

Only $1.77 a can at Wally World. Worth a shot.

Are you sure you dont have a minor oil leak. Happened to me. A had a very small oil leak, and it was dripping on my alternator making the belt slip when I first started it. Causing that squeling.

how much give are in your belts? If you just replaced them, generally you just tighten them until they stop squealing (making sure not to over tighten) I good rule is on the LONGEST part of the belt(between pullys), if you push in in the middle, it should have .5" of give.

I have this exact same issue. I'm subscribing for help. I'll work on mine this week. If I find anything, I'll let ya know. The strange part about mine is that the squealing doesn't really change speed as I rev the motor. Strange. :thumbdown

When i got my car their was a squealling noise comming from the engine. It was diagnosed as a bad water pump. I purchaced a new water pump along with all new belts and timing belt (all factory parts) and had a local shop install everything. The squealling had stopped entirely but their was more belt noise than before. Also my idle has been acting strange such as dipping down when i stop at lights. Now the squealling is back, its not half as bad as it was and its only when i start the car the squealling will last for 5 seconds and then stop. All of these symptoms come and go so i dont think anything is seriously wrong. So my question is why is my car still making noises and would any of these symptoms lead you to believe that the parts were installed incorrectly?
Thank you, your input is appreciated. :thumb:

I had a similar squeal on start-up after having some belts replaced, the problem turned out to be just a loose belt ( tensioner? ). The shop that did the work should be willing to make the adjustment for you.

Dude, make sure your Harmonic Balancer isn't coming apart....
And of course make sure all of your belts are tight...
Use a straight edge laid tangent to say your WP Pully and your PS Pulley and the other ones too, push down in the middle with a ruler.
Measure this amount of deflection, and you should be in the neighborhood of .25".....

I have no idea what that is. I'll prob take it to the shop and have them take a look, how should i comunicate your suggestion to the mechanic?

thanks for the response

The harmonic balancer is the biggest pulley on our engines.
It is attached to the Crank Shaft Sprocket.

There is an inner ring that attaches to the Crank Shaft Sprocket via 4 12mm screws, and an Outer Ring that drives the belts for the auxillary systems on your car.
These 2 rings are concentric to one another obvisouly, but there is a rubber isolator ring that is glued between both rings to help dampen vibrations and such.
This rubber deteriorates and the outer ring seperates from the inner ring and you will have a serious problem when this happens.....

Get it checked out.....

Hello everyone. New guy here
My 97 GST is doing that as well and I just bought the car. LOVE the car. HATE the noise it produces when I start the engine. Oh and the dealership that I bought from said that if is the belts that need to be loosened or tighted it is not covered under warranty. Since the belt tensioning is not under warranty I doubt the harmonic balancer is. What should I do?

yea mine did this too. id laugh and say it was screaming about the beating i was about to give it. one of my belts came loose a couple times, even after id tighten them really nice. anyways i think it was cuz they were new and needed a little running time. do they stretch a little or what?

I replaced belts with Goodyear Gatorbacks, tightened the heck out of the alternator and PS pump. The belts aren't rubbing anything.

I put in a new battery yesterday, it seemed to fix it....

[Hello the same thing happened to me I took it to 3 mechanics and changed the alternator belt 5 Times. Finally I found out the cam seal is leaking oil out onto the belt. Look on the underside of your hood for oil above the power steering belt and the alternator belt. The place mine is leaking is back in behind the power steering pump bracket so it is leaking oil onto the belt so they are slipping then shreding (At least that is what is happening on mine. )
