whistling sound at start up?

its not the turbo I know that much... my car makes like a winding whistling sound when I start it... it only does it when its cold and a friend of mine thinks the turbo might be going bad... its just the stock t25... i have no clue what it is ...any ideas?

its your power steering pump...my old gst use to do that also but only when it was cold. its not a bad thing just that when the fluid is cold its denser so it dosent lubricate all the pumps parts so it makes a noice till the fluid warms up and lubricates down...you could change it if you want or just learn to live with it and safe your self the money. hope this helps.

Do you have an adjustable blow off valve? My old greddy type s used to whistle at idle until I tightened the screw down a bit.

i lied though it does do it sometimes when its warm... and what i meant about it not being the turbo i was being a smart ass saying that its not the turbo spooling I know that sound and it sure as hell doesn't spool at Idle... I have no clue what it is

take the intake pipe off and push the compressor wheel back and forth. Does it touch the housing? do you have oil in the intake pipe or on the inside lip of your compressor cover? When was the last time you did a boost leak test?

haven't done a boost leak test yet but I think it does leak boost... because when i'm accelerating (even normal not slammin it) it sounds like this ...instead of ahhhhhhhhhhh... it goes ahhhhh ahhhhahhhahhhahhhh... you know what i mean? and I recently had the turbo off and it has shit tons of shaft play so that could be it I just wasn't sure... figured Id get with one of you veterans about it

i have the same problem: someone on here told me my turbo is slowly dying...Also, if i accelerate slowly sometimes, once i get into my turbo and i want to give it..it does that as well: ahhhahhahhh..and theres no power really...if i give it right from the get go its fine though...i don't know what that could mean though...any takers? ALSO, when i downshift, the car makes an ahhahhahh sounds while slowing down instead of a steady ahhhhhhh...i dunno if my clutch is going or it could be a drive shaft out of ballance possibly..Give me ## input please..

Yes, if your turbo has a lot of shaft play, there is a high chance that it is on it's way out. However, that doesn't discount the fact that your pressure system has many leaks that could at the very least help the situation.

It could be the turbo. I had a brand new small 16g (The other love of my wife, err life) and the engine made this whistle on startup in neutral and light throttle and SOMEtimes when warm. I swapped my TOB because the one I had was going out and the noise went away.

another thing, no1 answered last time...When i down shift..instead of a steady wannnnnnnnnnn, its a wannnwannnnwannnwannn and sometimes i think i hear things grinding against eachother.....i havent changed the tranfercase oil yet and its at 110km...i dunno if thats a possiblity...what could it be?

Throw Out Bearing (clutch), usually very noisy when on the way out.

thanks..well it is as 115,000 km on it and the clutch has never been changed...i already have a act lightweight flywheel in my room ...i guess ill jump on the clutch now..but im already paying $420 to get my timing belt changed this Fri...####en maintenance the throw out bearing...do i have to get something extra besides a clutch kit..or its part of it?

hey im having a similar problem but my car only dose a winding noise at start up and thats it no matter if it hot or cold i had a friend start it up wile i had my head in the hood and it sounds like it coming from the intake manifold. but it loud and only at start up no other time have i heard it. any one have any idea what it could be?
