Well heres the deal ...

local guy was selling a 96 GS 5speed for 1k. i went to look at it and drive it, it needs bumpers and skirts but i have those so no big deal. when i test drive it, 1,3,5 work fine, but 2,4,and R do not. u can go into 2nd and 4th but it doesnt feel like it really engages, the shifter also doesnt stay downward, it moves kind of up and towards the middle. and also the shifter gets stuck in gear while driving, i had to battle it at a few stop lights. the guy tells me that it just had a clutch put in and new slave cyl. but the plunger on the slave cyl was making a noise, like a clicking when press/depressing the clutch.

ended up getting the car for 200 bucks because my brother needs the motor for his 95, but i called the previous owner today and he said that the car was fine when he bought it, he loaded it onto a trailor and heard something "snap" and ever since then it has been having these problems.

any diagnosis from what ive said?

if the tranny is indeed shot my brother is going to use the motor but he likes this GS, would it be easier to do a motor swap or a tranny swap?

Its easier to pull the motor and tranny at the same time.

Can't speak for the NA Eclipses but from all my other car experience (focus, crx, etc) it is easy to pull the trans without the motor. However if the engine has to come out I would pull both.

Does the car go into 2/4/R w/o the engine on? It sounds like you have a selector or fork issue. Shouldn't be that hard to repair once its outta the car.

Make sure you check the shifter base and cables and make sure they are moving as intended. If something on the base broke that prevented the shifter from moving down that could be your problem as well.
