On my 90 Laser im planning to go bone stock at 14 psi for now. I had a friend call last night and told me he was dropping an AFC II off for me because he didnt need it anymore. I know people recommend around 14-15 psi on a stock setup but what im wondering is there any way I can up the boost to around 18 PSi and just rewire fuel pump and use AFC for more fuel? Or is this a dangerous thing to attempt?

Also im looking to keep this thing looking bone stock looking while performing a bit better. I am lookin at a big 16G and a 2.5 or 3" exhaust, including downpipe, with the quietest muffler I can find. I know the stock one would be a huge restriction on the system but I was wondering if anyone else could make a recommendation on a stock looking and sounding muffler? I am not lookin for a fartcan like I had on my last car, i want this to be 100% sleeper.

you will have to get a bigger fuel pump and bigger fuel injectors if you want to do it the right way....motors are not cheap...the afc is for tuning.

i dont believe that you need bigger injectors for that amount of boost on the 14b. i am running 17psi all day for the last few months on the stock 450's and an afc. just make sure you have a logger and watch for knock and make sure the injectors arent maxed out.

as for the exhaust, running a resonator will help quiet it down a bit. but it's gonna be relatively loud regarless, its a full 3" exhaust with no restrictions. your best bet for quietness is staying away from a straight through style muffler

But why use an afc if your not using bigger injectors?? Thats what your stock ecu can do, run 450's, thats what its meant for. It's for tuning, a piggyback controller that tricks your stock computer into thinking differently for fuel.

You can run 17psi on a rewired fuel pump and an SAFC II. You can also use it to tune to add a little fuel. I would recommend getting a datalogger first to monitor o2 voltage to make sure it stays around .93-.94

I wouldn't mess with boost or fuel until you get a boost guage (not the crap factory one) and a boost controller of some sort. (not sure if you have these, your profile is blank). I did the same thing with my exhaust, it looks pretty stock, yet performs like a champ. I got mine done by a local speed shop (saved a lot of money too). For the muffler, they modified a Magnaflow with dual tips to give it the stocker look. I would agree, the SAFC is nice to have as a precaution, but unless you are running bigger injectors, it isn't needed as much as a fuel pump and regulator would be for running higher boost.

Where's your logger????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

We have 1Gs. We can directly view knock counts made by the ecu. We have no excuse. before going beyond 14psi, get a logger of course. Besides, didn't you say that you only want to run 14 psi?

BTW, why run 17-20 psi with a 14b and ruin it in a few thousand miles, when you can just run it at 14-16 psi, not heat soak your stock ic so bad, and advance the timing/lean out a bit and make the same power. Boost isn't everything. Your stock sidemount cannot cool enough for the high heat that the 14b will be putting out at that high of a boost level. And, you'll be wearing out your 14B very quickly. You can sell a 14b on ebay for a decent return and put that toward a bigger, better turbo for the level of performance you demand from an older 14b at 18 psi.

I know that boost isnt everything, I am not new to the tuning scene, just to DSMs. I have been looking around and reading alot of posts about people with stock vehicles running 17+ psi and I was looking for some feedback on it. I am trying to learn as much about the ramifications of possible mods BEFORE I attempt them. The car is bone stock and will remain that way until I have the proper tools to modify it. I am not looking to blow up my car or run it improperly. This is the newbie forum and I am asking questions based on the fact that I am a newb when it comes to these vehicles. I had assumed thats what this section is for, but I seem to be detecting a slightly condescending tone from the quoted post. I apologize in advance if these are questions asked before. This is a large forum and while I utilize the search function, I come across so many varying points of view everywhere I turn, I figured it was simply best that I asked again so that I may recieve the newest and most pertinent information as it relates to my modifications.

That would be me being used to GM style engine management, basically engines with MAP sensor instead of mass air. I often forget how flexible the factory computers on these cars can be as far as building maps for higher than stock boost levels.
