i was reading on another post that the hks 272 cams intake side cam gives you more low end than the fp2 cams do. but the fp2 cams have more lift than the hks cams, and better topend due to the exhaust side cam. i want to know the truth about this. and i also want to know is, if this is true, then can i use a hks 272intake cam and a fp2 exhaust cam and have the best of both worlds? just a question that's been brewin in my head for a couple days.

If you plan on sticking with the Big 16G for a while then a 272 intake cam is not your best option as you'll lose a great deal of low end. Since the Big 16G flows around 36lbs./min of air or 520 cfm, running an intake cam of that size won't create as much benefit as would going with something that's made to optimize your current setup. If you were determine to run a staggered cam set, go with a 264/272 or FP1/FP2 and you'll have more room to grow into a larger turbo down the line. In addition, using a 264 or an FP1 for intake will help maintain your low end.

As a side note, the FP1 combination is good for turbos up to 650 cfm. You could upgrade to an 18G and still have enough left in these cams for them to be efficient. If it were up to me, I wouldn't mix and match.

Just my .02,

Andy

Edit: If your profile is correct, you're still on stock injectors and the stock sidemount. If so, you're a long way off from maximizing your current setup and I'd focus on those items before cams.

I really agree with andymoraitis here. To add to that, I decided to get a pair of FP2Xs. They are FP2s with a wider power band. I suspected that one could "come on the cam" (sounds discusting) by around 2500 rpms, due to the higher ramp rate (squarish lobe and higher lift than even the FP2s). And I was right. Even though these are cams with alot of power at 7500+ rpms they still come on strong at 2500-3000 rpms. I get great spool with my 18g now with them. I figured that I wanted to buy cams only once because I knew is was going to a 60-1 territory eventually, but I still wanted to have fun with my 16g and 18g:thumb: . But these cams need serious springs. Manley or FP's dual springs would be best. They have fat, fat, fat lobe tips!

sorry, i should update it then. im on 550's now. and soon to have evo8 front mount. my motor is being rebuilt right now. ross 8.5:1 pistons, eagle rods, block bored .020 over. clutch is also gonna be an act 2600 so i need to update it when i get a chance. thanks for reminding me

Not a problem! Since we're still on topic here, let me ask you what you plan on doing for turbo upgrades in the forseeable future? What we recommend will be directly influenced by what turbo you'll be running. Keep in mind that dsm-onster is correct about the wider powerband in the "x" series FP cams, but that you'll need upgraded springs and retainers to make them work. Let us know what your plans are, we'll do some research and then recommend a set that will work now and grow with you in the future.
