Is one of the 2 head gaskets better than the other for a high hp engine, or are they both basically the same??

i am also thinking about o-ringing my head or block, or maybe even both. what would be recomended for a high boost high hp motor?

By all means you'll probably be ok without o-ringing either, there is a big thread about this somewhere but the conclusion was unless you're shooting for truly insane numbers you'll be fine with either MLS or Cosmetic HP.

Im no sure about the Mitsu MLS. I heard about people pushing coolant with these at high boost. Someone correct me if Im wrong or if you have good info about these. I personally use the cometic and think it is awesome and works great. I boost up to 32 lbs on it.

i had a mitsubishi MLS and i was fine running over 30lbs of boost. with your arp head steads torqued properly u will not have a problem.

Not exactly sure but I do know that the cometic can handle up to 50 lbs of boost!!!!:thumb:

This can be true and also false. There are two types of cometic head gaskets. There is the regular which is good for up to about 31lbs and then there is the HP which is good for 30 plus.

This of course with ARP head studs :thumb:

If anybody's pushing coolant at high boost with either one of these gaskets, I can only make two assumptions, and both are installation related.

1. They didn't use ARP studs. These are crucial in preventing the head from lifting at high boost and causing the gasket to fail. There have even been a few courageous souls who have done 20-25 psi on a stock gasket with ARP studs without having the gasket fail.

2. They didn't use copper spray. I don't think it's necessary for the mitsu mls gasket, but it is for the Cometic gaskets.

When properly installed and the bolts properly torqued down, either one of these gaskets can take a high boost beating and you won't have to O-ring the block unless you're going for an insane amount of boost.

so basically what im getting is that both are very capable of handling 30+ lbs of boost with no problems and could easily go higher than that with O rininging on the hear or block ( or both)? i will eventually want to put down good numbers so if i O ring only the head or only the block which would be ore benificial? or is it best to do both at the same time? also, about the copper gasket spray, what is the procedure for using it? thanks for all the help guys!

To use the copper spray, just add 1-2 coats to both sides of the gasket, let it dry, then install and torque down as specified.
