Hey guys, so I have a 2gnt 420a motor that has a k&n filter. I was misfire problems under 3000 rpm for the longest time. I finally got better spark plugs and it was all better. Now its slowly starting to do the same thing. My cel is out but i read a code saying i had a misfire in cylinder 1. I think im running rich and fouling that spark plug but im not sure. I know alot of dsm's but im stuck on this one. Any advice?

It might also be the spark plug wires or the coil itself. Find a copy of the factory service manual and check the wires and coil.

The spark plug looks fine. Ill change the wires and coil pack, i just dont understand why it would work fine when i change the spark plugs and then slowly start again.

So you are switching plugs and it helps? I think you might be fowling a plug out, the colors on the plug could indicate why. If you google search it you will find different colors mean different shit.

I would check that out. Some colors would indicate a faulty wire, burning water/coolant, burning oil, lots of stuff. Check it out, if anything just for general knowledge. It will help you at some point even if not now.

If your coil was bad, it would act different. From my understanding a bad coil would ruin 2 cylinders, not 1, also it would- if it worked at all it, eventually (15-20 minutes into the drive) get too hot and the car will shut off.

Otherwise it wouldn't work at all.

Your head gasket (the one that is on the engine cover) could have worn out and you need new one. It's like 20$ at autoparts. I had the same problem, changed spark plugs with head gasket and car runs good:).

before you start throwing money at this and guessing whats wrong do some effective troubleshooting to save on the cost. the chiltons has procedures to test your coil pack with a multimeter, so instead of blowing $100 on a new one take 5 minutes to test the one thats already on there.
my N/T was doing the same thing on cyl. #3... after replacing the spark plugs it fixed the problem for about 3 wks until i completely lost the cylinder. after i checked the electrical side of things and everything tested good so i moved to the fuel, ended up being a partly clogged fuel injector. this might not be the case with your car, im just saying before you start tearing apart your motor and throwing money at it theres a lot of things you can do/check to narrow it down.

And I bet your spark plug had some funky white looking residue when that happened. Just speculating, there is a lot to be said about the condition of the plug and what might be wrong. I agree with you though, start checking stuff before you spend any $$ on anything

Thanks everyone for the help. I'm going to look at everything tomorrow (my first day off in like 2 weeks) i'll update you all and let you know what i find out. I know im burning oil, i have low compression on a cylinder (#4) but it hasnt caused any problems yet, its not burning to horribly, no visible smoke out the exhaust. Again ill let you all know tomorrow. Ill take pictures too so everyone can see if they see anything wrong.
