Methanol Vs. FMIC

A mechanic I was talking to was telling me about getting a Methanol Injection system saying it's better, cheaper, and easier to install than an FMIC. Does this hold much truth? I read a thread about water/ethanol systems saying thier safe so I don't think thats much of an issue. He said you just bolt it on right before the MAFs but with what I've read that doesn't sound right. Another thing is I live in Colorado which is at high altitude so would that help/hinder a FMIC or the Methanol system? Tell me what you know!

With your setup, id say get a FMIC, you are just going to run more boost. Id just use methanol to run a few more pounds of boost instead of running race gas.

Think about it this way, if you run out of methanol what are you going to do? a FMIC is always there and will always be working for you. I tend to think they are a bandaid for poor tunning or trying to get to much out of a setup that can't provide what you want it to. No there are some places or situations that I could see running it but for most I think it is a waste.

I have to respectfully disagree with the idea that methanol is a band aid. Running straight methanol in a properly prepared kit that's made for it will allow the motor to run like it's on race gas. Not all of us want an FMIC and some of us can't run them due to class rules. Besides, in warmer climates, a sidemount allows full airflow to reach the radiator and keep coolant temps down (a must when road racing).

If used on a sidemount that has enough flow and isn't a choke point, methanol can be an incredible sleeper mod. Please note I'm not talking about these low-end kits that use windshield washer fluid. I'm referring to straight methanol injection. The timing and boost you can run on pump gas is insane. However, from a cost perspective, an FMIC is cheaper and as mentioned, is always there.

Depending on how much contact it has with the aluminum it can. When used as a supplemental injection system almost all of it will make it's way into the combustion chamber and be burned along with the gasoline. So it's not something to really worry about.

I agree with Andy, in my opinion alcohol injection isn't a band aid. It's very beneficial when used properly, in conjunction with a properly sized intercooler. Water injection is a band aid, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have it's place too.

I plan on running methanol injection once I get a few more things done. I would recomend you checking out www.englishracing.net if you get a chance. Lucas has come up with a nice kit for methanol injection. You would want to set the kit up so it is only used once you hit a certain amount of boost say 10psi. Any other time it is not used saving you money.

If you were runnign straight menthanol you could. However, unless this is a race only car and I mean RACE ONLY, then he won't be running straight meth.

I would get the FMIC now like everyone is saying and then one day you could still run some type of injection if you needed too. Whos your mechanic it wouldnt happen to be Jack off of Nevada would it?

Methanol. Boost more, no knock and you won't hit fuel cut plus is better for the engine and you drop gas temps. SLEEPER MODE!

You could always run both. Granted it would be expensive, but I think it would be worth it.
